Newby Flash Question

I have a D70s. What is the best way to use fill in flash for portraits in the daylight. I take a lot of portraits like a fisherman with his fish. How do I get the pop up or even the sb800 to come on as fill in flash to reduce shadows?

What camera mode do you typically use? I typically shoot in the manual mode, and when I turn on the flash it fires. If you are using the on-camera flash, just push the button to pop it up, and it will fire.

I think though that for the situation you are describing, if you do not want to go manual for your aperature, shutter, and ISO, but you do want it to flash, then I think switching to the backlight mode will work. (The one that looks like a person with a star behind their shoulder.)
