Hi All,
Go easy on me - complete photography newbie here... :-)
Just bought a D70s kit and immediately apparent is that I need a flash, as the on baord one is rather limited. Can anyone suggest a model that does not cost arms and legs, suited to beginner-intermediates?
Many thanks
Gavin
Welcome to Nikon. I use the Nikon SB600 flash ($185) with a Sto-Fen Omni Bounce diffuser($20). The system greatly increases your ability to enhance your photos. I think I got mine at amazon.com and Adorama respectively.
Enjoy,

If the SB800,SB600 are still too pricey,
Nikon has a new flash the SB400, supposed to be out this month. B&H has it listed at $130. It is a compact i-TTL, tilt only no swivel flash that only takes two AA batts, and has a range up to 66' in certain situations & settings.
Friendly advice, get a Nikon flash for your Nikon camera, I recently got the 800, and the amount of info that is communicated from the lens and the camera to the flash is amazing.

I only considered the SB600 and SB800 because of the abilities granted by the combination of the camera and these models. I went with the 600 to start, and I am pleased enough with that. It has a good deal of power, and when using it with my D70s I have had superb results.
I ditto the remarks to get one of these two because of the no-brainer use due to the camera and flash communicating so well.
Since your on a budget I say the SB-600. If you werent, id say the SB-800.
Get the SB-600. You wont regret it. The extra $40(US) over the previously mentioned SB-400 is WELL worth it!
