Seems to me that the Canon A640 is providing same or better image quality at 20% less price.

I'd actually take the Powershot A630 over the 640 and save a little bit of money (money which could go to an SD card or some nice rechargable NiMH batteries). They're basically the same camera save for the body color/MP difference. Still, the 8MP of the 630 should be more than enough.

Comparing the two cameras, as I've done for you on this side X side comparison, (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_a640%2Cpanasonic_dmclx2&show=all) you might notice that the LX2, uniquely, has a 16:9 sensor format, compared to the A640's 4:3 format. With that sensor and the lens, the LX2 can shoot at 28mm, whereas the A640's minimum wideangle is 35mm. The LX2 is much smaller than the A640, has no viewfinder but its LCD; however you'll see in the comparison that the LX2's LCD has twice as many pixels as the Canon's. The LX2 lets you shoot in RAW, the A640 doesn't. Finally, the LX2, unlike the Canon, has image stabilization.
Similarities? Not many.
