can someone please explain when, (as in what circumstance), to use the L switch on the D80 and what the benefits are of it. a link to a pic taken using this feature would be appreciated. :)

As far As I know (and I don't own a D80) the L switch locks your custom settings. Displaying a photo taken with the switch locked is irrelevant as what you see will depend on how each user configures their custom settings.
I assume that it's operation is explained in your user manual.

yes tis in the manual, but i still don't get it. would prefer a "real person" explanation and advice. :)

All the "L" switch does is disable the four way controller while shooting so that you do not move the focus point around. Switch it to the dot and move the four way controller around and you will see the focus point change, then flip it to L and then you can't.

focus lock....lock the focus point on the view finder so that you dont accidently change it when you want it fixed

thanks. do people use this much ? has a very prominent part on the body for something i can't see myself using very often.:confused:

It's very useful for composing photos within the viewfinder.
