I'm trying to make a decision on my next camera and I'm looking for a 6mp camera with extended zoom, image stabilization, and good manual controls for an amateur photographer. If I can stay within the $300-$400 range, it'd be best. So far I've narrowed it down to:
- Canon Powershot S3 IS
- Kodak Easyshare Z612
- Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7
I read a lot about them on this website and the magazine, but I was hoping to get some feedback from anyone who's had practical hands-on experience with any of these cameras. I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks a lot

These are all 12x ultrazooms but the FZ7 is the only one with extended zoom.

oh, thanks for the clarification. I didn't even know there was a difference between ultrazoom and extended zoom. I just meant ultrazoom in my first post...What's the difference anyway?

extended zoom does in camera cropping (producing a lower MP image) to simulate the extra zoom. It avoids the upsampling of digital zoom and is a pretty nice feature in my opinion.
I'm not a fan of that Kodak and while Canon makes a lot of great camera's I think the S3 is overpriced relative to the pany. Very nearly bought that FZ7 myself but ended up with a Fuji S6000 figuring they got these things called tripods and monopods to make up for IS on the lens but there is no way to make up for the dyanmic range of Fuji.
Either way, ultra-zooms are fun and I'm sure you'll have a great time and get good pics.

optical zoom is all the zoom you should consider, once the image has been through the lens to the sensor all zoom is basically digital

Just bought the Panasonic FZ7 and has been the best for the money
so far. Has a rechargeable battery that gets over 300 pictures. I have
had other brands that use the AA batteries and yes you can get them
anywhere but even the rechargeable AA go quickly. If you need a 12x
zoom this is the camera to buy.
