I have the kit lens right now and I would like a lens with more zoom. I am not looking to spend $1000 or more right now on it. Please reccommend one in the price range of $500 and under. Thanks!

Well for the Nikon D40, you can only use AF-S lenses to autofocus, so any zoom or lens with anything other than AF-S won't focus automatically. There is a new 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor that would work really well on your D40, but you might have to check on some reviews for quality and any up or downs for this lens, I think this lens is a little above 500$ but not to much (at kitscamera.com it is $529.99 + free shipping.

That is all I found for Nikon zooms, and I'm sure other people will recommend the Sigma 70-300, but I don't know if those lenses are supported on the D40 because of the AF-S issue.

What about the Nikon 55-200?

You can get a list of compatible Nikon lenses here (http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=14153&p_created=1164912831&p_sid=mrfixvoi&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9OCZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPTAmcF9wdj0mcF9 jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX 3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PUQ0MA**&p_li=&p_topview=1)

or another list of Sigma and Nikon lenses here (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=21186297)

at the moment these are your options. If there is nothing on the lists that you want or within your budget you will have to wait until new lenses are released.

How much zoom do you want?

How much zoom do you want?

Not sure. I had a Fuji S5200 that had 10x zoom and that was nice...Just want to be able to take some outdoor wildlife pictures.

I didn't mention that because that lens is really cheap, and now since you said you want to take pictures of wildlife, the 70-300's that Nikon and Sigma have probably have better quality than the 55-200, because that is just a kit lens.

You have overlooked something. This thread is about what will work on the D40.
The current 70-300 lenses from Nikon and Sigma WILL NOT work with the D40. I assume that the new Nikon 70-300VR lens will but I haven't seen that confirmed.

K1W1 the new Nikkor 70-300mm VR is an AF-S lens :) so it should work on the D40.

Yes, sorry for the off topicness. And yes the new Nikon 70-300VR is AF-S as well as the 55-200mm. So if you want to wait for the 70-300VR then go ahead, or the 55-200mm is also AF-S so it will work on the D40 as well.
