Just got a call today and the new Nikon lens:
Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Is on it's way to me from Ritz. I hope to have it in a few days and hope to get some good test shots with it early next week. I only have the kit lens for now that came with my D50.

You better post up some pics in the Picture of the Day topic in this forum so we can see how well this zoom works. Also try and get some low light shots to see how well the VR does with this lens.

I'm not a great photograher yet, but I will do my best, with work and school and stuff at home I will see what kind of time I have, but I'm excited.

That's great news. I've been looking at that lens for months but it's taken a while to be released. Some pics from the lens would be good.

OK, I'm still so new to this and lens testing has not been part of my learning curve as of yet.
I took some shots over the weekend, but I am not sure if they will be helpful to anyone or not.
I know that I love the VR as I tend to have a slight shake naturally so it really helps make my photo's look a lot more crisp, especially at the 300mm end.
I'll post a link shortly when I get them put out at photobucket and you guys can let me know what you think. I will not do an PP to any of the pics, just straight out of the D50 with this lens on it.
If you have an suggestions for things you would like to see I have the camera here with me at work, so let me know and I will see if I have time to do it.

OK here is the link to the photobucket album with the pictures I took in it:
Photobucket Link (http://s116.photobucket.com/albums/o32/laurakwojo/share/)
Most of the pictures were taken with the D50 in auto mode, but some of the squirrel were taken in A-mode with me going through the settings, clicking up on stop with the wheel for each picture.
The pictures of the squirrel were taken from about 20-30ft away, it was midafternoon.
The pictures toward the end of the series were in a room inside a house at night, only the christmas tree was on for light, and the D56 houses, no other light sources, other than my flash, again in Auto mode.
The ones of the cars are in auto mode and testing the panning capabilities of the VR mode on the lens.
All pictures were taken hand held.
Questions just ask, and suggestions for other test pictures, let me know.
All indoor pictures were at night, with low-light conditions with only the flash on.
thanks,
Phil

Looks like the lens performs pretty well in some low light conditions, and also performs very well outside. Thanks for posting!!

I like it so far, but I don't have any where near the experience of most of you guys.
Again, if there is something you want me to try or do, please let me know and I am willing to do it for my own benefit as well as the benefit of others.

The handfull of the pictures I looked at were all taken with flash, do you have any that were taken indoors without the flash? I am too lazy to go through all 60+ to find a non flash photo.

Phil,
A few of the pictures of the squirrel were blured. Do you know why that was? Did you not have it in focus or was the shutter speed to slow? I ask because I am thinking of getting this lens for shooting my kids on water skis. And that wil be fast action. How quick does it focus on moving objects? I too am a newbi.
Thanks,
John

OK I realize that I didn't take any indoors without flash, I will have to do that an post them, sorry for that (darn newbie!!)
As for why some of the squirrel are blurry I am not 100% sure but I know some of it was me and you can see that when the surrounding area is blurry.
When it is just the birds or squirrel that are blurry they were moving. I was outside and was just clicking through the f/stops and taking those pics in A-mode. I wasn't watching them trying to get them in any kind of pose so it could have just been bad timing.
I think the lens is fine for outdoor sports as can be seen by the photo's of the moving cars. I was taking that to test the panning VR capabilites of the lens and they seem just fine. The cars are always (for the most part barring any human error) in focus as I panned along with them driving down the street. The speed limit on the road is 35mph, but most people are doing 40-45mph.
The last show in that sequence shows it at 70mm and the starting point for most of the cars, it was probably 200-300 ft away or maybe a little more.
I will try and use the camera here at work today in a darker area without the flash and post them later.
So far I like the VR, it really helps me, but I don't have anything to compare it to as this is the first and only lens I have used with the VR in it.
