Um...can you even do that on that camera? I don't think the Nikon D50 can even do that. Read the manual?

You can't.
The date is recorded in the Exif data attached to the digital image but you cannot automatically have it appear on the actual printed picture.

With Canon, you have to be in the smallest "postcard"-size image setting 640x800 or something. However, it can not be removed (except retouching it). Pentax may be the same - I should know but I don't :-( Note that some printing programs can print some or all the Exif info on or next to the image/s at some printing settings. Pentax does only the date on the image when printed.
No mention of the date imprint in the DCRP review.

The OP asked about a Nikon. I fail to see why what a Canon or Pentax can or can't do is relevant.

I thought he might be able to find a similar setting on his Nikon if there was one.
And also, perhaps having the date on just the print rather than image would be enough for him.

Thank you for the info, I thought that might be the case, I could not find it in the Manuel
If you would like the date stamped on the photo just add it on in post processing.

here is a nice way to date stamp the file (name) but not on the pic
as stated above just use adobe or whatever and add the txt to it
if you want to remember the date easier
menu
then wrench
then USB
set that to
PTP
now when you plug in your camera and turn it on in XP it will open the scanner and camera wizard
in there you have the option to name the files
I prefix them with nikonD50_datehere
it will then copy the images with the date you provide and whatever you name the file
this makes it a lot easier for me as well
hope this helps some.

Definitely take the Photoshop or post-processing rought. It'll be a lot easier.

If you have Photoshop, use an auto EXIF extractor script I have available on my website. You can tweak it to draw whatever data you want:
www.cdifoto.com/exif.php.
Don't ask me for help though. I provide it as a convenience. I don't have the time or patience to go back and forth about it. :p
