Um for wider I'd go for the Nikkor 12-24 f/4 for $900, or even the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens is good for wide angle shots. Sigma has a 10-20mm wide angle lens and so does Tamron which are both way cheaper than the Nikon.
edit: I noticed that TNB pretty much said what I wanted to say.

Nikon, Tokina, Sigma, and Tamron lenses are compared at that link I provided above. Check it out.... By the way, the OP already has the kit lens you suggested or at least it is listed in his current signature.

Well since most of these lenses are short lenses, they will be very easy to hold at longer exposures as compared to a long zoom lens. Out of these lenses: Nikon 12 - 24mm f/4, Tokina 12 - 24mm f/4, Sigma 10 - 20mm f/4 - 5.6 and Tamron 11 - 18mm f/4.5 - 5.6, I'm guessing the lenses that you will have the better shot would be the Nikon and the Tokina because of their constant aperture at f/4. All the other lenses when you zoom in, the minimum aperture you can have goes up, so at the long end of the zoom either 18,20,24mm the minimum aperture you will get will be f/5.6 which isn't very ideal for cloudy weather. Now each of these lenses probably have their ups and downs in quality. I don't know how well each one performs but Ken Rockwell link should give you a good idea. If you have the money, I'd say the Nikon is your best bet, but if you don't, shoot for the other 3rd party lenses.

Except I disagree with his assessment of the Sigma feeling "cheap". I own the Sigma and have used the Tokina, and actually liked the build quality of the Sigma better. Also, no complaint about the sharpness in mine:

I checked your link and was wondering about the following comment since there was no response...
"Have you tried it on full frame yet? It will vignette but above 11.5 mm it will be fine."
The "full frame" comment must refer to Canon, doesn't it?
Also, have you used the Nikon lens as well? Any comparison photos taken with Nikon cameras? In addition, have you tried the same model Sigma lens mentioned above with a Nikon D200? I'm just wondering about that after reading this other comment.
"Becasue it's not as sharp at the sides my D200 won't always focus properly with any other than the center AF sensor."
