A buddy of mine has a pretty nice Nikkor 200mm f/2.8 lense. Its a bit on the old side but it works like a charm. It took REAL nice pics and played well with the D70s.

Well this evening he dropped it pretty hard. It was like slow motion as the giant lense tumbled to the ground. Now it does not focus.

Anyone ever had lense repair done before? Was it costly? None of the glass is broken, so that helps some. I looked around on the web, no real "quotes" but then again it isn't too common of a thing.

I thought about all for 2 seconds about maybe taking a crack at repairing it myself...but...na...

Thanks for any advice.

About 7 years ago I sent an old 35mm and a lens to Pittsburgh Camera Exchange for repair. If I remember correctly the lens repair was quoted at around $175. It was a 80-200mm zoom that didn't zoom. In my case I elected not to get the lens repaired. It was an old screw mount lens that I was able to find a replacement for on e-bay for less. That probably won't be the case in your situation.

See if you can send it to Nikon, would be my first shot at the lens. And I would NEVER think of fixing a lens myself because I don't know what I am doing, and only professionals do cause they've done it to more than one lens. Try emailing Nikon services, and if the lens is still under warranty then it may be free.
