I am totally new to DSLR cameras. Does anyone have any good tips to learn how to use one well or perhaps some good book recommendations?

Thanks.:)

Read the manual for the basics. then find a suject that is pleasing to look at (perhaps a fountain and flowers at park with some moving part, such as occassional people), then take a bunch a pictures of it using all your program modes and scene modes if you have them. Use any multiple exposure modes (under, over, on, etc). Try your burst mode. Try any "effects" such as sepia or black-and white. Shoot a few at the different image size coices.

Basically use all the features on the same subject if possible, so you can compare the change in effects.

Lots of books out there. Check out a bookstore perhaps and get one on technique that is not too basic. You want the next level with photographic examples. Look at collections of photographs, like from Life magazine to see what "good" photgraphs show.

Some of it you only learn by trial and error. Some of it is your artistic eye.

Good luck.
