Use SB-50DX Flash with Coolpix 8800?

Is the SB-50DX okay to use with 8800 or must I get new SB-600 or 800?

I called Nikon over a similiar SB-20 speedlight flash. The reply I got was that only the 600 or 800 is iTTL. The other speedlight flashes (like the SB-50) will work, but only on manual.
