And finally a paddle boat tied up at the dock. Notice the water levels up over the sidewalk. I'll post some more later. Day 2 so far has been rain so not much of a chance to get any pics but they are predicting some sever storms for this afternoon so maybe I can get some cool lightning shots.

And one more for the road so to speak. I really didn't do much in the way of processing on these shots, pretty much straight out of the camera with a bit of highlight recovery where needed.

Hey everyone.
I got a s6500 for christmas but to my discredit I've only had it out 4 or 5 times!! I'm a complete beginner in photography but wanted something I could do more than just hit a button on. So far I've spent most of the time playing with settings indoors.
One thing I've been doing is shooting in RAW and post-processing. I'm not sure it's worth it as I mostly don't have a clue what I'm doing. What do you all think? Can you get better results or is the camera's own sharpening, color adjustment and jpg algorithms good enough? I've tried comparing them, but I am in need of a new monitor so comparisons are hard (everything just looks blurry and dark). To that end, I apologise if I've over sharpened and messed up the brightness of what follows.

Adjust your monitor, I can barely tell what is on the 6th one :) . The 5th picture could be amazing, only if you had your F-number one stop smaller :) .

Yep, they are dark and blurry for the most part. Ok, some quick tips.
-Try to shoot manual when you can, keep your light meter bar in the center and most shots will turn out fine. (adjusted up/down with the thumb wheel)
-Try to keep the camera at it's lowest iso allowed by conditions (F button)
-If your a fan of the way canon photos look with a lot of punch to the color then shoot chrome, otherwise normal. (F button)
-RAW is the way to go once you learn the software side of thing properly, keep practicing.
-This camera's strong point is outdoor photography, landscapes, macro photography. The flash is harsh and not really suitable for portrait and while this camera holds it's own up to ISO 400 indoors and in low light it's not even close to a F30/31 in IQ/noise. I don't know why, they have the same processor and sensor so I suspect the difference is in the lenses.
Read up on traditional photography techniques such as composition, ISO, shutter speeds and framing and most of all have fun! Welcome to the boards.

thanks for the comments.
i've deliberately darkened these because of the problem i have with my monitor to compensate so hopefully others could see them, seems i've compensated too far!! i still think the last is over-exposed, the lights are bleeding a little bit too much. dark, yeah, but that's for reasons above.
p_schneider, i pretty much bought this camera from the strength of your photos (and i think cosmos?). some very nice stuff you do. your recent train station ones i like very much, nice and crisp, good lines/composition.
what do you recommend to sort the blurryness? most of the pics i posted were tripod pics, but shooting in raw and manual sharpening i don't seem to be too good at, although perhaps i'm missing something on focusing.
i've been trying to take many recent pics at f/11, iso 100 which means longer shutter times, but i'm mostly taking pictures of things that aren't moving. the reason i'm doing this is for focusing/depth of field, but perhaps I may be misunderstanding some of the theory. I do this to try and keep as much in focus as possible, but recently everything came out blurry. i've never used manual focus yet, only auto. i tend to shoot through the evf, so it's not great for focusing.
Incidently, does the camera display RAWs on the lcd processed? that look awfully sharp and vibrant compared to how I end up processing them. Perhaps I need to be shooting in JPG.

Hey Circa,
the focus problem could be a number of things actually.
- first off, F4 is the "sweet spot" on this camera. You will get your best shots at or around F4.
-next, make sure your focus switch on the left side of the camera is set to S
-last, make sure you are getting focus lock. This means you hear the beep as it locks when you press the shutter half way down. If you don't hear it lock in then it's not focused correctly. You may or may not get the red AE warning on the focus lock error so it's important to listen for the beep.
Photometry setting in the menu:
- Average is used on high contrast shots or landscapes
- Spot is used for macro shots or when you have a single subject lit and the rest of the shot you want to remain dark
- Multi is supposed to be the best of both worlds but I get mixed results with it so rarely use it.
AF in the menu:
Center focus is all I use. I cant think of a time when I've actually switched it to one of the other settings outside of playing around with the setting.
Of course this is assuming manual mode, the camera will make it's own choices on these settings when the scene positions are used.
Now on scene positions; most of the time I shoot manual since that's how I learned to use the camera. I purposely stayed clear of the scene modes until I could achieve the desired results using manual mode. That being said, I do use some of the scene modes in a pinch.
-Landscape on the dial is nice to use, same with Portrait since it caps the ISO at 800 automatically.
-Sunset in the menu along with Snow works pretty good too.
-Sport will do ok if you have good lighting but it will jack the ISO through the roof if you try and use it indoors.
WB I always keep on Auto since I adjust that in ACR when I PP.
RAW is displayed on the LCD, I don't believe the camera processes it to jpg before displaying if I understand what you're asking.
BTW, I keep the display on 60fps, the extra power it draws is worth it.
Hope this helps Circa, good luck!

Hey P_Schneider,
Thanks for the detailed reply!! I think I really must be doing something wrong with focusing as I've been using the MF position, which I now read in the manual is for Manual Focus. I always wondered what S was for, knowing that C was for continuous auto-focus (which I have made an effort to keep away from). Hopefully this will help sort out some of my blurryness, thank you.
The f4 is interesting too - my best pics generally come when I use the zoom with a large aperture - most likely around the f4 mark.
I've been keeping away from scene modes as when I'm out I can never remember which does what and the limits they set. I can see why they'd be useful, but I think I'll keep away until I can use the camera in manual (and I understand just what each scene mode offers better).
Thanks again!! I hope to be able to share some sharper, more focused photos soon.

It is really quite deceiving how big they are until you get close to them. Columbia has a solid 6' wingspan when she stretches them out, truly impressive.
I consider myself blessed for growing up in an area that is a natural nesting place for these great birds. Actually, I'm doubly blessed since just north of the cities a couple hours is a natural migratory path for all kinds of raptors. Literally thousands of eagles, hawks, falcons, owls, and other birds of prey travel through the city of Duluth MN every fall.
Here are a couple links for those who are interested.

Hope those that celebrate it had a happy 4th of July this year. I spent it as millions of Americans did this year. Visited family, BBQ, couple of beers and of course fireworks. I shot 120 RAW captures with various levels of success, here are a few of the best.
All of these were shot RAW, converted with ACR, and cropped. Enjoy!

Still going strong. This thread; that is. Let's keep it up S6000 owners. I hope this thread will outlast a few replacement cameras that Fuji offer for the wonderful S6000.
That will teach manufacturers we do care about image quality and not fooled by the MP race.

I hope to get the chance this week to climb up the 5 meter and shoot from there. We end our season tomorrow night and then it is on to champs so we only have 6 kids practicing So the coach will let me near the pool during practice to try and get the neat shots.

Hello to everyone! This is my first entry on this group... Actually I joined a couple of days ago and I am also a very fresh owner of a brand new S6500FD.
Don't laugh, somebody should've forgotten some in a shop warehouse or
something and put them for sale here in Bucarest at the end of June...
I'm posting some of the first photos taken with the camera - I must state that I am just in the pre-learning phase.
Maybe after some comments/advice AND lots of exercise, the "quality" of
these photos will let me show greater progress in the future ones:).
Meanwhile, I am happy to go through your posts and to equally prove the
thread is still growing!
Thank you all

Hello all,
Well it's been about a month since I last posted and what a month it's been. I've been moving over the last month and I've finally got a fully functional home now. (Spinning I haven't forgotten you) At any rate the downside to all this is of course I haven't had a chance to post much but the upside is that the digs are on the 3rd floor and has a west facing balcony.
This series were all shot from the balcony and I've been blessed with some fantastic skies in July. Hope you enjoy the "water tower" series.

Probably spot...I'd definitely recommend using it if you want to take better control of exposure. Any other meterings are compromises where everything looks "good" but no single thing looks great.

Thanks for the answer... My problem is that in your photos everything looks great and usually nothing looks less than good, while in my photos most of the things look bad and too few tend to be good... Means I have a lot to learn, first of all is how to correctly use the S6500 which is (still) new to me.
Saturday afternoon I tried to "get" some sun sets, but most of them ended up
underexposed, reddish and far from the natural colors my eye percieved. Obviously, when I later saw and enjoyed Paul's water tower series taken most of them at about the same time of the day as my photos, I had to ask...
As for your splendid flower close-ups (with or without bugs...), this make me feel ashamed with the couple of sunflowers I "captured" sofar with S6500.
Following the same logic as above, more question will probably follow, but
definitely in a further episode ...:o

I'm not sure how you post process yours, but if you shoot JPEG you should set Sharpness to Soft. Having P, S, A modes at -1/3 EV (exposure compensation) by default will saturate colours better and give less clipped highlights.
I'm still really new to macro, but took it up as a challenge. F4 - F5.6 is a good start for them and use macro mode with the zoom instead of super macro.
You can see how the metering works if you look through the viewfinder at a scene. Since Multi is like another type of "average" metering, it won't be very obvious...switch to Spot and use P mode then wave the camera around a scene. You'll see it get darker or lighter depending where you point it. Point it at an object with a dark tone then a light tone...the shutter speed could jump from 1/50th to 1/100th or 1/200th. Take some pictures, see how it works for yourself =)
There's lots of different exposures for the sky or a sunset...point it at the sun and it will attempt to expose for it by giving you 1/4000th shutter (bad lol) then slowly move it away and watch the scene brighten up and the shutter speeds get slower (1/3000th, 1/2500th, etc). You can see the exposure change in a way you wouldn't be able to see with Multi or Average metering.
It takes more time using Spot though...if you don't have the time it can ruin pictures easily. Events, indoors, etc I'd just put it on Multi and P.

They look quite good! I'd just remember to use ISO 100 any time you are shooting the sun since you should get very fast shutter speeds. And F8 was a good choice! That's how you get the star effect you see :)
I don't think people mind the size. They want to see what this camera is capable of.

Been shooting some hummingbirds lately but had to hold them back until after the fujimugs challenge ended. Enjoy!
Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/400 second
Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 4/1 = F4
Exposure Program = shutter priority (4)

All these shots are cropped at 100%. You can also assume I tweaked Levels and curves along with a light USM pass.

I believe this is a different juvenile male but it could be a young female too.
Note the spider web hanging from it's mouth? Spiders are a hummingbirds second most favorite food. I'm guessing this one was on it's way to have a drink after lunch ;)

Thanks lazerin.
here are the focal lengths from the hummer shots.
Focal Length = 3610/100 mm = 36.1 mm
Focal Length = 3610/100 mm = 36.1 mm
Focal Length = 2500/100 mm = 25 mm
Focal Length = 2500/100 mm = 25 mm
Focal Length = 2160/100 mm = 21.6 mm
Focal Length = 2900/100 mm = 29 mm
btw, I leave my EXIF data intact so you can view all the settings from my shots anytime you wish. I use the EXIF viewer plugin with the Firefox browser personally but there are other viewers out there too.

Thanks for that Paul. Just one thing, could you please explain what the 3610/100mm means? I was expecting the focal length to be something between 28-300mm, haha I'm confused.
Also, may I ask what you set your focus setting to? I assume it was set to high speed.

Definitely shoot RAW and watch your exposures. Figure out what's most important in a scene and try to preserve that. Not everything can turn out optimal or all our shots would look like HDR :P
Also, a friend turned me on to LAB sharpening. It gives more natural looking results and doesn't work by increasing edge colour contrast. It will bring out more detail if you look very, very carefully at a before/after with your own photos.
Only use LAB sharpening if you shoot RAW (16-bit workflow) though because the colour space conversion, if you were to work on a JPEG with it, will lose more colour levels or something. In the case with JPEGs use Smart Sharpen (Lens Blur, More Accurate ticked)

DoF with p&s cameras isn't ideal so it's a lot of hit and miss with macro.
Thank you Jarrett. After the first couple of weeks with the 6500, when I shoot mainly Jpeg and I was wandering why it doesn't look better than the
F40, I decided to shoot RAW and learn to convert to PSD 16b for processing.
I am using S7RAW -as my Photoshop 8(CS) does not support .raf files in ACR (although Bridge can see and display them OK, together with exif data!)- and of course it turned out to be another challenge to learn good conversion.
But it's nice and challenging, like in the old days of b&w negative film processing, only now one have a lot more power in hand...
I read things about LAB processing, but I postponed it for a later time as I want first to master Photoshop better than I do. Anyway, thanks for the tip.
As for your last words about DOF, out of the "lot of hit and miss", for the moment it seems that you guys got all the "hits" while I'm still staying with the "miss" :)
Will be working on all this and hopefully the good results will show up. Meanwhile I'll keep posting to receive your feed-back, very useful to me!

Paul I am so amazed by your humming bird pictures! I just wish ours were a little calmer! They fly in and as soon I am ready to try a shot....the take off!
Tyvm!
I have a few things going for me.
1. we are in a 3rd floor apt so the birds feel safe
2. we have a patio umbrella which also helps them feel safe, plus the umbrella has a stars and stripes motive to it which makes for a whole lot of red for the birds to see.
3. I spend a lot of time on the deck with them so they have become accustomed to me and the camera. The camera was actually the hardest part, I don't think they liked the lens moving back and forth. I had to put a hair "scrunchy"? that was kind of flower colored around my lens hood for a bit until they got used to it. Now it doesn't bother them that much.
As to shooting I've found that I've had the best success using Shutter priority mode w/ 1/250sec or faster setting. Also, and this is important, I use manual focus mode w/ macro.
The camera is not fast/smart enough to focus on the birds by itself so what I do is put it in manual focus and press the little auto focus button while it's pointed at the feeder until it locks.
Now you can shoot anything that's the same distance to feeder and it will be in focus. The macro helps bring out the detail and really locks the focus in tight.
I'm also shooting from about 3-5 feet away. ;)

Those little balcony on there are neat. Are they made of wood?:D
Thanks Gabriel :)
Yes, they are. Wood was a main construction material for roofs, balconys and sculpured details in Bucharest at the beginning of 20th century.
Very nice boat and marina under a perfect sky you got there, but I like even more the pattern in the following one !

One thing about trees...they really aren't the best thing to shoot with this type of camera. You're almost always shooting against a bright sky and it makes for lots of fringing in the branches. All large sizes are on my flickr page.

Thank you that's very kind but no, not even close. There are many people on these and other boards that are far more talented than I.
I will admit I've improved a bit but that's a combination of participating in forums such as this, studying the basics, and practice, practice, practice.
I purchased my S6k Nov. 06 so it's almost 2 years old as I write this, and I've shot 11,609 shots with this camera. (Including the Hunter moon I shot this morning:D)
Throw in a thousand shots on the F10 or the wife's F30 and I'm shooting around 6000 shots per year. So it's a commitment, but a worthy one and I have to tell ya, I just love to shoot.

If you have your camera setup to continuously count you can see the count in your review mode while on the camera. Since it's only a 4 digit number you have to do a bit of math because the camera rolls over to zero after 9999. Since my last shot was 1609 and I know I've already passed this threshold it has to be 11,609. Normally it's displayed as xxx xxxx in the upper right corner it breaks down like this. The xxx is the number of shots on that date and the xxxx is total number of shots from the camera.

I am looking for a 58mm fisheye adapter lens. Has someone here used a fisheye adapter lens with the S6000fd ?!
Maybe someone who has knowledge about these can help me out.
Would this be any good?!

hey all, since the 8000fd thread is pretty much dead, i think im going to start posting my pics here...if thats okay :o
Well this thread is for displaying shots by the S6000fd, at least it has been up until this point so you would be the only person not shooting with that cam. The help we might be able to offer could be limited since I'm betting most of us haven't used that cam. That being said I'm not opposed to opening up the thread if the rest of members are on board with it.
What's your say everyone?

I remember I didn't think of it very special while it was still in the camera, and I even considered deleting it. It was a shot taken while I was just experimenting with settings. Lately this photo has grown on me somewhat. I can't pinpoint how exactly though, but I just really like it.

its awesome
great silhouette and dof
ive had my camera since Christmas and i agree about the power switch
defiantly getting stiff
i suggest setting the camera to hold the image open after you shoot it
i find i switch back and forth from play to shoot much less this way
plus if you hold the exposure button near the shutter it shows the blown out spots

If you guys want to take closer macro shots i figured out a trick
set the camera to super macro mode and manual focus
after you focus on your subject you can zoom in to about 50mm and adjust any focus issues with the manual focus ring
normally you can not zoom in on the subject with super macro mode
check it out
here is a before and after shot (i edited the colors in the 2nd a bit)

the blues you see in my shots are courtesy of a circular polarizing filter, it really brings them out. The open area is my back yard (so to speak) and nature provided the drama, as it usually does if you're in the right place at the right time. ;)

Paul, I just seen your photo some 15 minutes ago and I simply can't stop looking at it. It is unbelievable!
Not speaking of the excellent technical side of it (CP or not ...) you managed
to shoot a viewable definition of "rolling storm" and the mood of the photo
is excellent. I also like the lighted line beyond and below the cloud which could be the good weather behind the storm?!?
This is definitely a magnificent shot !

Thanks Gabriel, I love the shot too. It was truly a case of being in the right place at the right time and that storm was rolling. The light line in the clouds I believe was just a break because it stormed for a good couple hours after that.

you've got a pretty nice area to shot the sky
i just recently bought a tripod
i didnt have one for awhile and it really hinders my motivation to shoot when i cant get sharp shots
tripods are so overpriced
i got the cheapest one $18 because i cant see a 20 or 40 dollar jump in quality when you got decide to spend the money
i hate how theres no selection and your forced to choose from like one brand of chinese made garbage
all the photo shops around here sell the same crap

I believe I shot those in Sunset mode so I didn't have control of the aperture. Besides, the trees are a couple hundred yards away so I'm not sure how much sharper you could get them with this cam. If I remember correctly the focus was locking on the smoke stack.

Hi, first post in here, bought an S6500FD recently from Ebay for about £100 and tried it out in Barcelona.. I kind of knew what I would get as I've also got an ebay'd S9500 for a similar price. Why both ? Well originally I couldn't decide which of the two to get and eventually plumped for the S9500 this summer.
After a holiday trip to Egypt although happy with most photos, I was disappointed with some of the lower light photos (ISO400 noisy and grainy) from the S9500 and thought the S6500 (given the glowing low ISO reviews) would be significantly better.. well having both side by side I've found them to be actually quite similar, with perhaps the s6500fd being slightly less noisy but of course different features as well as pixels! Anyway I shall have to decide soon which one to keep.. and on to a few s6500fd pictures, no post-processing (not that sophisticated yet !)

Thanks!
I just used manual focus. I wish I had a tripod. I found it to be really hard to look at it through the eye piece and turn......

ok is that something I am missing? I had to turn the ring on the camera once I turned the little button thing on the side to M.....

That's one way. The other is to set "slider" to M, then to press that button in the middle of that slider. That is, to call it that way, automatic-manual focus. In other words, that button locks the perfect focus, but you can still adjust it with manual focus ring. Not to be confused with autofocus. It yields better results, I tried many times.
P.S. Sorry if I didn't understand you, I had a feeling you didn't know about that button...

believe me I don't know much! The more I play with this camera the dumber I am! LOL! and I am planning to move up to a DSLR!
I thought the M on the camera at the top had to do with only the Fstop and Apt.......I swear I need to actually read the manual....

Hahaha, now I am confused :D! I'm not talking about the WHEEL on the top with P, M, S and AUTO on it, I'm talking about this little thing and the button in the middle of it:
