Hi All, i just signed up to this forum. So suprise to see many S6500 owner here. Found the photos taken are nice. Just wondering do you guys use the f-chrome mode? I found my pic over-saturated in f-chrome mode especially when taking the greenish object (trees, forest, etc). Do you have the similar problem? Just to show a sample here taken by me, doesn't look natural.

Spidercrown: F-chrome is sometimes oversaturated, I am always using standart mode, and if I feel the need for more vivid colors, I can always use postprocessing.
It is just an autumn forest, but I liked colors.. (raw, iso100)

Just to share my shot here. Chrome mode, no PP only resize. C&C are welcome.

There are very dark or very bright areas on this picture, and they make it look worse than it should. You almost had sun in the frame, and that's something I allways try to avoid. That's also why colors are so messed up. All in all, it could be a lot better shot :) ...

Thunderchase, i did this purposely to have sunlight at 1 side. But look like doesn't work out :p. Anyway thanks for you comment.
Hello,
Again nice photos you folks are taking...I am still practicing. Here are some photos, mostly flower close-ups...looks like I need to get a tripod as well to help with blur. We had some wind which I tried to capture but did not come out the best. I added this as well though (last picture). These are only resized.

Well I was kind of hoping that I would make the 1000th post but I missed it by a few. Interesting though,
Post 1000 was made on Page 100 by bristol_matt who made his First post!
A lot of 1s and 0s in there, not sure if it means anything...
At any rate, thank you everyone for making this thread a huge success! I've really enjoyed looking through all the pictures and with any luck this will keep rolling for another 1000 posts. Have fun and thank you for contributing! :D

It was a spectacular morning today and I got some shots of the sun coming up. This is the same vantage point that I've used in the past but I never get tired of seeing the sunrise coming up over the river. Today was especially nice because this is the first time in about 3 weeks that we've seen the sun around here. It's been nonstop rain or drizzle or just plain cloudy but no sun.
At any rate it was a beautiful morning, enjoy!

Sun is just over the horizon in this shot. There was a slight gap between the horizon and the clouds. I even managed to get this without lens flare across the shot. There is a bit of it but it's all centered on the sun so it really doesn't impact the shot much.

Hey mate, I came so close to a k10D kit, I actually had it in the cart at one point but in the end it came down to the camera or a new laptop, and the laptop won due to necessity. Maybe next year or if I see a great deal on black friday or something I might do it yet. Awfully tempting. Don't get me wrong, I still love my s6k but I would also love the added flexibility and the larger sensor too.

Ah ha Paul... I understand the temptation alright.
The way the MP war goes now, I doubt if its replacement can stand toe to toe against S6000fd. Take F31/F50fd for example. And that means S6000fd will reign in lowlight for a long time yet.
If Fuji comes up with replacement camera (for S6000) with not more than 8MP, IS and TTL flash and similar feature then maybe we have another winner. Otherwise, it's just a step backward and S6000 owners will hold on to their cameras for a long time.
And yes.... imagine a PnS camera with S6000 IQ and with external TTL flash.... that will cut a chunk out of entry level DSLR market.
Thanks, Thunderchase for the comments.
Here are a few more from the other day I was sitting on my front porch and it was raining outside. The first two pictures I noticed that if I zoomed to the faraway focus the black iron rod would be out of focus. Then vice versa if I zoomed in on the black iron rod. It was interesting to see. You can also see the different effects of the rain.

It was a spectacular evening in Minnesota today. Not only did I catch a great sunset on a crystal clear evening, but tonight is the hunters moon. They call it that because most of the hunting seasons are just getting started around here but that's not why it's special. Its special tonight because the moon is at it's closest point to the earth, almost 30,000 miles closer than in April. Enjoy!

I agree, the shot would have been much better if the frame wasn't there. It cuts off too much of your foreground. Remember your rule of thirds and if you don't know what that is then google, it will help you with composition. Beautiful mountains though, I bet it was breathtaking standing there taking the shot.

hi all, my first post and first pic! recently purchased a s6500fd. im a utter utter photo noob, still trying to get my head round the manual for the camera and im keeping it set in either landscape, portrait or the sp modes for the time being as the manual modes confuse me far too much. anyway back to the subject, heres my first pic

Thank you for all your wonderful pictures. I am now a proud owner of the s6500fd after obsessively checking this thread every day for a long time.
I'd especially like to thank P_Schneider and Cozmo who really sold the camera to me.
The not so good thing is that it is a christmas present from my girlfriend and even though she'll let me use it now, I have to wait for christmas to get all the accessories (including the memory card!!). So for now it stays safely indoors with me and will only be used for 5 photos at a time (all I can fit onto the internal memory using 6mp N jpg). At least getting to Christmas and being able to shoot in raw and outdoors (with my protection filter on) gives me something to look forward to! See you all on Dec 25th!!!

It's more of a landscape to me. I guess I didn't think about a primary subject. I shot it because I was enjoying the mood of the evening.

I went to a music festival outside of Atlanta called the Echo Project (http://www.the-echoproject.com/) recently and got some good pics. Some of the night shots are a little OOF because of the long exposure times hand-held, but it shows what the camera is capable of as far as night time shots go. Well this is my first contribution to this amazing thread, so I hope what I'm sharing can measure up to what others here have posted!
I've had my S6000fd for a few months now, and have put it through its paces on numerous occasions. Its low-light performance at concerts and the like simply amazes me, as well as its ability to capture great landscapes, sunsets and of course the average and every-day shots everyone takes. It really is a remarkable camera, and for the price, I can't imagine anything else coming close to what the Fuji is.
I've been very interested in HDR photography, and have tried numerous times to get results like I've seen here and on other forums. However, my attempts always seem short of what others are getting. So, I figured I'd post a picture here to see what others think of it, as well as perhaps generating some interest and inspiring others to try their hands at HDR and post results to this thread (or start another if it distracts too much from this one).
Here's a 800 pixel high preview, as well as a link (http://picasaweb.google.com/dtarrance/HDRPictures/photo#5127960845024561426) to a 1600 pixel high image in my Picasa album. To view the image full-size in Picasa, click on the magnifying glass on the right side of the 2nd gray navigation bar. (I'm not terribly impressed with Picasa, but have yet to try anything else that bests it. Recommendations???)
http://lh4.google.com/dtarrance/RyotOC3NCRI/AAAAAAAAAEY/AtqqeLw6530/s800/BaldRiverFallsHDR-PS.jpg
Also, here is a link (http://picasaweb.google.com/dtarrance/2007SmokyMountains) to a few select photos from my recent trip out to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee. I have, oh... about 800 more from this trip, but I seemed to have underexposed quite a few of them. so the post processing is time consuming to get an acceptable balance of exposure and quality.
Any comments, questions and criticisms are most welcome. I'll be looking forward to participating in this thread for some time to come!

Hey all, my s6500fd arrived today! It's my first 'proper' camera :)
I've browsed through every page of this thread and it's clearly a brilliant camera (with brilliant users!). I hope it won't be hindered by my skills, or lack there of.
Anyway, got it second hand with a bunch of accessories (1gb xD, 512mb xD, 8xAA NiMHs, fuji case, UV and CP filter) all for AUD$370 (US$340~). Unfortunately, I'm right in the middle of exam preparations so I won't have a real opportunity to play around with it for a few more weeks.
Still, it's hard to resist toying with a new gadget:

I guess I'm being too picky... But I really like the effects I've seen others get with their HDR photography. The effect I'm talking about must be with a wider bracketing setting, such as -2/0/+2, where the Fuji can only do -1/0/+1. I realize you can do better than that manually, but with some subjects, it would take too long to change the settings for each picture. What I've done to combat this is take a +/-1 bracketed exposure with the exposure compensation at -2, and another set of 3 at exposure compensation of +2. This seems to work rather well, but it still introduces some movement in my test pictures so far.
I'll post some more pictures to this thread later today!

Haha, I realise it can be hard to see the subject. It would probably help if the image was made smaller so that it's easier to visualise the shape of the shadow at a glance. However, it might be harder to read the text on a larger monitor and I wanted to preserve the text as it had some significance.

Here's a HDR panorama I took while out in the Smoky Mountains. This was taken from the Foothills Parkway West, from the top of Look Rock. I'm 100% convinced this is the best picture (or set of pictures) I've taken with this camera so far. I think it will be hard to top this one!

Click on the picture above to go to my Picasa album to see it larger. You really have to see in at 100% to see all of the details. (I think Picasa must have done something to this JPG on their server. The one I have locally looks MUCH MUCH better than this one does....)
Anyone know of any other HDR panoramas out there? I haven't been able to find much about them, even though a panorama seems like the perfect candidate for HDR!
Comments & Criticism are always appreciated!

That's a nice shot there dtarrance. HDR is definitely something I'd like to try as well.
Are you using the autobracketing function with +/-1EV? Or are you doing it manually and adjusting exposure per shot? If so, are you adjusting it using exposure compensation or adjusting the shutter speed?

Thanks for your feedback lazerin!
For these shots I was using the auto bracketing feature set to +/- 1EV. I could have done it the other ways you mentioned, as the subject wasn't moving and time wasn't a factor.
If I had to do it over again, I would have done it in manual mode and set the shutter speed to cover a wider range of exposures. I would have liked to have captured 5 exposures per segment of the panorama. That would have really brought out the details in the final image! But all in all, I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

I was also looking at the S6000fd, but ending up going with the S9000 instead. The S9100 is pretty much the same as the S9000, but with a bigger lcd, faster autofocus, and a more durable command button. I haven't had much experience with my S9000, and have no experience with the S6000fd, but I believe they're both very similar. I chose the S9000 because of the rotatable screen, hotshoe, and CompactFlash memory. The memory was the main reason against the S6000fd.

The bottom right corner is part of the wall that wound up in the picture. I figured that the added detail above it would contribute to the overall feel of the image, but I guess the wall is distracting.... I've received a lot of questions about it from the people I've shown the picture to. :p
For the software, I used PTGui to align and blend the individual exoposures into 3 different panoramas (normal exposure, over exposed, under exposed). I then used Artizen HDR to merge the three exposures into a 32-bit .HDR file. I also used it to tonemap the HDR file using the Lock06 operator, as it seems to work well with this scene. (I tried the others, but none looked as good as the Lock06 operator.)
After the tonemapping was done, I loaded the .TIF into Photoshop for some minor corrections to the color, contrast and to sharpen the final image. From start to finish, it took considerable time, but I'm quite pleased with the results.

thanks :)
the second shot is the reflection of some trees and the sky in a pool of water which i flipped 180 degrees (the photo not the pool hohoho). it makes more sense if you look at it the other way round but i thought it looked better this way. admittedly it does look a bit abstract if you don't know what it is

Thanks for link.
It's a problem with all cameras at small f -stops. Your S6500 is limited to F11 by Fuji because of it.
I try to keep my S6000 between f4 and f5.6 if at all possible for maximum sharpness.

No, the second was shooted to raw, and only adjusted colors and levels in ACR, and the third one was two layers, where the top one was B&W with removed region to see through. Then I've applied some lens blur.

Are you using FD + Flash? That usually works pretty good for me and I think IFlash is a bit more of a gimmick than anything else. The FD works pretty good though for portrait shots. You can also adjust the flash in one of the menus if it's too hot for you. I wish I could have 2 tilt points on the flash, the default position we have now and a higher angle so you could bounce it off the ceiling.

Haven't had much luck with FD, only rarely get the green square (although my 3 year old daughter is a bit fidgety!). Is the FD needed to activate the iFlash?
I'll try turning the flash power down a bit and see if that helps.
I'm new to manual controls! My other camera is a Panasonic FX12 which is nice and pocketable but has no controls (although usefully you can put a limit on the ISO in auto mode, unlike the Fuji). I'm finding I mostly use S mode because I need at least 1/60s otherwise children's arms and legs are just a blur!
Here's one of the flash "white face" pics... probably doesn't help that she hasn't seen much sun this year either :(
Was shot indoors after sunset, with about 120w of incandescent + flash.

I just bought some cheap studio lighting. Well at least by western standards -- it cost me 300€. You can see the kit I bought here (http://www.moneta.co.yu/?id=38119).
It has three 180 Watt/second slaves with 35W modeling lights, three aluminium stands, 50x70cm softbox and another octagonal softbox. Slaves can be triggered by sync wire or by IR. Power can be reduced to 1/4. Shot below was made with only two slaves (with softboxes) set to less than 1/2 of power output and no other light source. Camera was set to ISO 100, F6.4 and 1/200s.
At first I had some trouble because S6500FD fires pre-flash for metering but unlike DSLR you can't disable it. Few layers of duct tape over the built-in flash later I got slaves to fire in sync with the built-in flash and eliminated the harsh light from the built-in flash at the same time.
I also learned that the Fuji calibrates white balance at 100% white so I went to the photo store with Fuji digital printer and asked for a calibrated 100% white print 20x30cm in size. Then I used it to set custom white balance for my new lights. You can see the white paper behind the lion.
Here is how it all turned out:

- Yes, I am using built-in flash to trigger the slaves.
- Yes, I duct taped it.
It is possible because slaves have IR sensors. They don't need visible light for triggering. I duct taped built-in flash because I don't need or want its light.
I also turned the caps on those IR sensors so that they can only pick up the bounced IR (in other words sensors are not facing the camera). That in combination with the duct tape worked for me.
Instead of duct tape it would have been way better if I used unexposed but developed color film (http://www.photocritic.org/2006/create-your-own-ir-filter/) but I didn't have any. I could have also bought an IR sensor/trigger which ignores pre-flash for 30-40€ but they didn't have them in stock at the moment.
Someone said how colors are dull now that the winter has settled in, I disagree -- manual mode, tripod, RAW, ISO 100, 4 sec, F8 (hyperfocal trick used):

Correct info is 1/15s, ISO 800, Spot metering (hell of the camera it will be that can do 1/350, ISO 200 in dark of the night, as EXIF says). Photoshop gone crazy, probably called the EXIF from the layer above (I have put 2 pictures in one layer and saved only this layer)...:)

gotcha, thanks for the info Levicki. I might have to look into a setup now that I know it can be done. I've always considered this to be a limitation of the S6k, not being able to sync with external flash that is.
On the topic of winter and dull, it really depends on what type of winter you have and how cold it gets. The colder it gets the clearer the air gets and the sharper the picture turns out.
I missed a golden oppertunity the other morning. It was sunrise, we had fog that was just lifting, the trees were frosted white, and the blood red sun was just peeking throught the clouds. Unfortunately I was late for work and didn't have time to take the shot but it would have been as lively and colorful as any summer shot I've taken.
On the other side of the coin we can go weeks with nothing but gray and trust me, the shots aren't worth taking the camera out of the bag.

Very nice pictures Harborside. I have a dslr also, but this Fuji is just so fun to use I decided to keep it. The high iso shots inside without flash were impossible with other point & shoot cameras I have owned. Yes there is noise, but Noiseware cleans that up where it is acceptable to me. It was snowing here yesterday, so I got the Fuji out for some practice. Here is a 1600 iso shot from window & Christmas tree light in macro mode. I brightened it a bit and resized for posting.

Hello all,
I hope your holiday was as great as mine. I was lucky enough to have my whole family together this Christmas including my son who just returned from Japan and my grandson who had his first Minnesota Christmas. He's used to Gulfport Mississippi weather so this was quite the eye opener for him. Here is a shot of his first experience with snow, which we have quite a bit of this year.

I never expected that saying "If I just had a way of eliminating those damn wires and keeping the same framing it would have been a perfect shot" would actually challenge someone to go through the effort to actually eliminate those wires from the photo.
Then I got an email from tralexan (http://dcresource.com/forums/member.php?u=25435) -- he told me that he has removed those darn wires and sent me a photo so I can see it for myself. Since what he did was nothing short of amazing I sent him an original photo with some tweaks (less NR, better contrast, more correct colors) and he retouched it again. Here is the result:
http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q212/levicki/fuji_s6500fd/th_DSCF5046.jpg (http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q212/levicki/fuji_s6500fd/DSCF5046.jpg)
It goes without saying that I am going to print it and put it up on my wall. Great work tralexan, many thanks!

Hi people, i bouth a fuji 6500 and it's very good, i take very good photos so far, but there one photo that i just can't do it, it macro shots, they just not very good.
Can someone give a help? Like macro with fuji 6500 for dummies :P
Thanks
Hi Pedro,
I get to use this camera on a daily basis for close-up work.
Here's what works for me:
aperture priority mode
aperture to f8
iso 100
use a tripod
use the self-timer
macro zoom range 28 - 100, (10 cm to 3.0 m)
supermacro zoom to 28 only, (1 cm to 1.0 m)
turn off the flash and use external lighting
Experiment with different ways to illuminate your subject.
This picture of the back of a US penny was taken in supermacro mode at a distance of 1 cm using one 50W tungsten lamp.
Have fun!

Hi everyone,
for all of you who purchased the S6000fd a while ago and paid around $300 or even less and even received the $50 FUJIFILM rebate you will definitely appreciate this great camera even more when you find out that you can barely find a store online that is still selling this camera and if you do find one the price tag is $400 and up!
There are sites still advertising it for $300 or less but these are scam websites so be careful if ordering the camera!
This was also the case with the great f30 and f31 models.

Lunar eclipse tonight folks! Last one for 7 years.
It was a crystal clear night here but around -7f so I only stayed out for around 15 shots. I was impressed that the camera performed well at this temp, I was outside for around 25 minutes.
This shot was quite challenging since the light was shadowed and constantly changing. Long exposure was also a challenge even with a tripod since the moon is actually moving quite fast. I finally found the sweet spot at 1 second. Fast enough not to show blur but slow enough to get an exposure that showed some detail. Not a great shot but decent all things considered.

Peggy - excellent photographs
Jarrett - I hope you are using some kind of filter for those direct sunlight shots - People have reported, after having their camera pointed in direct sunlight to have damaged their CCD's. Now, I have not heard of this happening to a S6000fd yet, but it is always better to use caution.
Maybe input from more experienced users or some photographers opinions would be great on this topic.
Hopefully Cozmo or Levicki will read this thread and respond - because I have a feeling they are credible in this field.

02-28-2008, 01:32 PM
Well, the sun acts on the sensor all the time when it is previewed on the EVF/LCD, not only during the shutter, but I believe that a few seconds once a while won't cause any harm. Some laser shows are much worse (as well as to our eyes!).

Great result for ISO100; Paul.
The sweetest thing about that generation of Fuji cameras is you can use ISO200 or ISO400 and double/triple the shutter speed while still getting clean images. What a shame they don't make cameras like that anymore.

Ya I hear ya mate. I had high hopes with the s100fs but from what I've seen so far I already have a better camera with the s6k. I'm still looking at a pentax though, k200d with the pentax da 18-250mm lens is the current fantasy.

Depends if the price drops into the $500ish price range, that would really be tempting. I'm really torn about this too mate as I do enjoy my s6k. Absolutely love shooting with this camera, but I still cant help wondering what I can do with better equipment too so that's probably the real reason I'm looking in the first place.
I'm not saying I've mastered the S6k or anything but the camera does have it's limitations and one of the biggest for me is the EVF. I spend hours viewing and deleting extra shots I take just because I don't see a clear, live view. Manual focus? Forget about it.

It is common with Fuji cameras. I enjoy the "star filter" effect but do understand how it could be distracting. Here is an example from my S8000.

thunderchase
04-02-2008, 02:26 PM
Well, don't point your cameras directly to the sun! That would help ;) .
Star effect can be achieved by decreasing your aperture (higher F number) - in that case, the number of arms shows the F number :) .

And one recommendation - filters, especially these without antiglare coating, could even worsen the lens flare.

Are you going to have a laptop with you? That's the easiest way to go. I don't know of a device that would automatically offload the pictures straight from the camera. (maybe a handheld pda or something if you get the right adapter cable)
If you have access to a computer over there and all you need is a portable hdd I would recommend a Western Digital Passport drive. You will see Mybook drives out there cheaper but they require a separate power cable for the hdd, the passport runs on USB power only so should work anywhere.

There are many portable hard drives that don't need a computer. Here is one of them.
http://www.digitalfunstuff.com.au/prod1257.htm
In SE Asia there are computer shops everywhere, save some remotest jungles. The computer shops offer services such as internet, phone, back up photos; etc. I suggest you buy a card reader so you can leave USB cable at home. You can buy the CD/DVD media over there. I would back up 2 identical copies of every CD/DVD just in case.

Of course I know how, where and when the dust got in. LOL.
As you remember from the old F30 thread of my then newborn son taken with this F30 since 4 minutes of age (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showpost.php?p=184859&postcount=138). We took him to the beach about one month back and he walked on that beach for the first time on his own and I wasn't going to let the wind, dust, surf spray and drizzle stop me capturing the moment; yes we had all that at the time; so I took the risk. Well... I got some nice shots (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showpost.php?p=294654&postcount=159) and video clips (albeit with dirt visible). The last shot before that showed no dirt. Unless you are as silly (as me) to brave such wild condition at the beach there is no reason to worry about your wife's F30. :)
