Can someone tell me what the differences between using

Canon's LA-DC58F with a 58mm to 52mm step down ring

the Lensmate 52mm adaptor
for the A610-A640 family? They look about the same to me (except for plastic versus aluminum). Are there any differences that would affect wide-angle and tele convertors?

i would suggest researching which tele/wide converters you plan on buying. if you plan on getting a 52mm threaded converter (s) then get the 52mm lensmate.

if u plan on getting converters with 58mm threads, then get the lensmate 58mm adapter

either way id avoid the plastic canon adapter. jus cuz its plastic =\

another option is of the converters u want are both 52 and 58mm's then get both adapters :p

I am curious as to why aluminum is better than plastic for the adapter. Yes, plastic is weaker than aluminum and is more prone to breakage/damage, but the camera's mounting mechanism is also plastic.

This means that if something bad happens to my camera (say I drop the camera or it gets hit  ), the most likely place to break is at the weakest link. This means that if I'm using the Lensmate adapter, my camera is the mostly likely thing to give way, especially at the mounting mechanism . If I'm using the Canon adapter, the adapter is the most likely thing to break.

Considering the adapter is only a cheap piece of plastic, I'd rather have to buy a new adapter than a new camera (even if the plastic adapter is overpriced for what it is).

Since most lenses have aluminum casings, I would suspect that would less likely to break than the adapter or camera (though the glass could shatter still).

As for my original question, I probably should have been more clear. I'm wondering which is better from a photography standpoint. Ignore cost and the plastic vs aluminum issues. Is there a difference in length between the two? Does it affect focus, zoom range without vinetting, etc?

seems like you answered your own question, go for the plastic then :p

and in terms of size/lengt/physical measurements etc... the 58mm lensmate and 58mm canon are the same. lensmate designed their based on the canon ;)

the 52mm is tad bit shorter

from a photography standpoint, there are no differences..

my camera dropped when i put it in my locker in school with the 52 mm lensmate adapter... it is still perfectly fine though! =)

Hi,

Is the S3 IS lens adapter mount really plastic? If it is, then I think I might go for canon's plastic adapter instead. Same reason as lathe. (I don't own an S3 IS yet, or have I touched one either)

The metal can dent and if it does filter then may not fit. Also if you take the adapters on and off alot it can wear the connection on the camera out and create slop. These are the 2 extremes though.

The benifits of a plastic lens is, its cheap to build and it can help seal the glass better. Glass as you know holds temrature for a while, if its really cold then gets warm it can condensate. Condensation can mould, mould can etch glass.
