Nikon has replaced the traditional high quality Coolpix macro mode with the Coolpix 8800 FISH-EYE CLOSE-UP mode. Nikon has completed this removal by preventing the use of small (F8 to F32) aperatures which are needed to get long depth of field. See samples in:

The old Coolpix 995 and 4500 takes real macro photos. Real macro means that the 36*24 mm object size fills the frame as the SLR 1:1 macro lens does. The real macro means also that there is no barrel or pincushion distortion. See some CP995 samples:

I really hope that Nikon will upgrade the old and tardy Coolpix 995 or 4500. Especially I need faster operation, more pixels, less grain, TTL flash, larger and brighter movable monitor. Movable monitor is much more flexible on the grass level than the optical viewfinder, which forces to take photos from bird's-eye perspective. Most of the insect species live on the grass level and treetops.

Ofcourse a digital SLR with small sensor size and without the optical viewfinder might be even better.
