Have had my D70 about a year, with the kit lens and a 70-300 (Tamron). Realized after a few months I needed better low light option, so I picked up a 50 1.8 and SB600. Almost 100% of my shots are my kids, ages 3, 4 1/2, and 7.
I plan to upgrade over time to meet more specialized needs (low light, sports) by picking up a few more primes (Sigma 30 1.4 and Nikon 85 1.8), as well as a 70-200 2.8 (Sigma or Nikon, if I can swing the cash).
In the short term, however, to just take the camera and spend a day out with the kids, I find I spend too much time switching between the 18-70 and 70-300, and miss some shots I could have gotten with the others. I recognize the super zooms have flaws, but the convenience will be worth it.
So, basically, I am looking for an all in one travel type of lens to carry with my 50 1.8 to serve for general shooting with my kids, mostly outdoors.
The 18-200VR is out for now due to financial reasons, as well as I would rather spend my money down the road on the primes and 70-200 mentioned above.
I've read a lot of threads and reviews on the pros and cons of the various superzooms, and think I have it narrowed down to a few options.
I am debating between the following: Nikon 28-200G, Tokina 24-200, Sigma 18-200, or possibly the Tamron 28-300. I am leaning towards the Tokina, it seems to be well thought of for the most part, and a good used copy is fairly inexpensive right now.
Also, on a totally different matter, how hard is it to use a monopod in the type of shooting I described? Seems like it would be a heck of a lot easier to manuever quickly with than a tripod, and I think I could use a cheaper form of VR.
Thanks in advance!
