Hi people,

I am after soem C&C, I was hoping to get a crisp moon and the foreground in silhouette, Any ideas on why the moon has blown out, camera, lens or haze??

I love the composition and am looking forward to hearing some coments on how to get that moon in focus. I have tryed those shots a few times and haven't been able to get very good results.

Eight seconds is too long a shutter speed to get a clear shot of the moon. It's too bright. You'd need a shutter speed of around 1/1600 second or so, depending on your aperture.

Of course, at that speed, everything else in your picture would be dark.

What you need to do is to take several shots of the same scene, at widely varying shutter speeds. Then combine them in post-processing. You can get lots of examples of how to do this by searching HDR (High Dynamic Range,) digital blending, or auto exposure bracketing. Here's a thread to get you started: http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23926

FWIW, I think the image looks great as-is :D

The shot would look good if the moon was in focus, but I like it as is too.....Nice shot!

It may not be the result you wanted, but I really like it as is!

Maybe you were doing this already, but try shooting at dusk before the sky is totally dark. That will reduce the contrast. Also shooting when the moon is low in the sky helps since the atmosphere magnifies the size of the moon (though you risk more haze between you and your subject.) Last night was a perfect night here in LA for such a shot and if I wasn't so stressed out trying to fix several computer problems I would have had my camera out. :(
Anyway, here are a couple of my moon shots taken with a Panasonic FZ-20 and TCON-14b tele extender (which is for sale BTW ;) )

Haven't been able to do anything like this with my Canon though... :(
