i have been looking into getting either one of these cameras. I know that the a95 has the higher mp, but also has a lower optical zoom than the S1. Which do you guys prefer?

... but that doesn't necessarily mean for you.
The S1 does it for me because of the high zoom factor and IS. This gives me lots of options in framing shots, which I like. In addition, the wide range of auto, semi-auto and manual settings are also welcome.
What I *don't* do (or at least seldom) is:
- crop photos as part of post-processing, which will require a higher MP count to keep quality
- tote the camera *everywhere* (eg. to work), which the additional weight & size of the S1 may be a little too much to bear.
If you do these, the A95 may be better suited.

In terms of image quality, I'd suggest the A95 since it doesn't produce as much color fringing in images as the S1 IS. However, if you'd prefer more manual controls, the ability to zoom in more and a better movie mode, than the S1 is your better bet.
In terms of speed, these cameras are about the same.

I like the flexibility that the long zoom offers. You've got great reach, and the S1 also does portraits nicely too because you're able to pull off a relatively shallow DOF at 10x zoom.
