My understanding is that there are two versions. The original 100mm f/2.8 macro and the USM version. The USM version focuses faster, has full-time manual focus (if I recall) and the non-USM extends when focusing. The USM was updated with internal focusing. I think the speed and IF system make quite a difference. As far as I know they're basically the same optically.

That should make a nice lens to add to your collection. I was going to get one this month but apparently Europe is too big for a macro and I'm going to need a wide angle for my three week vacation:p :D
Good luck on your bidding!

My understanding is there isn't much difference in the two.
macro vs. non-macro
2.8 vs. 2.0
You can use the marco for the same thing you would use the non-macro fpr but lose one stop..
However -
You can't use the non-macro for macro BUT you gain a stop.
Just gotta decide whats important to you. :D

Many times I've found myself almost making the purchase on this lens _ one of Canons finest from what I've seen of it.

My new lens arrived today. Im so happy that it got here for the weekend!! I got the box open and grab the poppy filling and unwrap the lens... but wait a minute... this is a 75-300mm zoom lens!!! HUH not even close to Macro lens. what a mess, the person sent the wrong lens. I got the ph. number and called right away. sure enough, they sent the wrong one. I am just glad that they were not trying to scam. should get new lens mon./tues.

Ok, I have the lens in my hands.. but no pics till tonight (im at work) however…. I think I see another problem. Just looking at the lens, its in GREAT shape, has filter, came in a bag... but… when I look through it I can see some dust on the inside that I can not get to. My bet is this will be a problem and will show up on my pics. Any advice on getting that out? Im thinking by the time I get this lens in working order (l’ll have to have it cleaned?) I should have just spent the extra $50 and got it new, this has been the biggest eBay pain in my ASS.
thanks TIm

that sucks, Tim
My only advise is to send it into Canon to have it cleaned and calculating shipping and the cost of cleaning it should add up somewhere around that "extra $50". Or if you can send it back to the seller for a refund.
I was never a fan of buying lenses on ebay, One you really don't know what you will get (condition, etc etc), and second because you only save a few bucks.
But anyway, good luck on that.
