Hey guys, I am a regular in the regular canon section of this forum. I have been using regular point and shoot digital camera's for over 3 years now, and I think I would like to try a DSLR now. I know that I would like to go with canon as a brand, but I am unsure of which camera to buy. my budget can be no more than $900, and I would like to have a nice lens with it as well. What would you guys suggest for me to buy?

Thanks, I look forward to hearing your opinions!

Welcome to this section, 900 doesn't give you much room to work with and "nice lens" is a very reletive term. It will depend on what you are expecting to be able to do. You must also consider extras like a bag, memory cards, lens cleaning materials, ect. So a 900 body and lens will very quickly rise to 1100. just some things to keep in mind.

If $900 is your limit perhaps a Pentax would be better? Pentax is a cheaper brand and has cheaper lenses because it's not so mainstream.

Your best bet is to start off with the older Rebel XT with kit lens. They can still be found in stores. You will need to buy compact flash card(s).

Get nicer lens after you learn more about what focal length you need. The kit lens isn't the best lens, yet, it's still quite capable.

^ agreed. Look into used XT dSLRs and invest in a good lens. I suppose you can also get a Nikon D50. They are very cheap these days. Yeah yeah... it's a Nikon so sue me. :D

For the kind of photography I like, it is mostly telephoto. I like to shoot things that are far away, that I cannot get close to. I meant that 900 is the budget for the camera itself. But could you also recommend a couple good lenses for telephoto. I would like to see more zoom than my A620.

I got my Canon Rebel XTi 400D for $850 USD, a few months back, which included the following: a descent camera bag, 1Gb memory card, kit lens. The initial price was slightly higher, say $900-1000 USD. I had to bargain to get it as low as $850 USD.

I recently found out that with the same price in another store, I could have gotten a tripod to come with it. Oh well, you can only go so far. ;)

Try getting it with this price, offer to pay in cash, and request to give you everything above plus an LCD cover :D Just a suggestion. Good luck!
