PCT Challenge "Holiday" week ending 01-07-07

Alright boys and girls this months challenge is "Holiday" can be any type of holiday season related. Though I don't do Christmas myself... I am thankful and will be forever grateful that our Lord and Savior came into this world to save us. As always if you choose to accept this challenge, put your creative hats on and strut your stuff. Thanks in advance to all the participants hopefully these execises will make us all better photographers and artists...

Let's see some more exif data guys I know it takes a little extra effort but it's worth it.

This PCT Challenge will run into next year.

PCT Challenges will have a two week duration in order to give those with limited time a chance to participate.

In our last challenge the numbers improved. Though I hoped it would have done better, oh well... let's make this one the best one yet guys...

Good shooting ladies and gentlemen.

Dustyporch--thanks! I increased the saturation just a little bit in Photoshop. And I finally figured out that if I'm gonna take pictures lit by regular lightbulbs (in lamps with yellowish shades) then the "tungsten" setting gives much better white balance than "auto." Took me long enough....:o

Amimaija--that's pretty cool.

Here's my first holiday picture (should get some more later). :)

I wasn't very satisfied with it, when I saw it on my computer monitor - it was crooked and I wasn't quite happy with the colours and it was a bit noisy. So I had to do some post processing on it. Got the colours a little better and the noise much better (I think the noise shows the most on the full size picture, though - the pictures here are both resized to a smaller size). :)

Here is the final result:
http://hem.bredband.net/wesake/Pics/IMG_2942_rotate_crop_colour(RGB)_noise-removal(despeckle)_resize_unsharp_mask.jpg
Post processing: rotate, crop, colour (RGB), noise removal (despeckle), resize, unsharp mask. I'm still not sure about the colours, though - maybe they were more correct before I changed them. Or maybe I should have set the white balance manually. :o

Here is the original picture ("PPPP"), resized only:

Thanks, Wesan. I wanted to have just that part of the window shining through. There wasn't enough light to get a good exposure on the whole window. I blacked out some other parts of the window that were showing. Do you think I should brighten the colors?

Oh, OK - now I understand your intention with the picture better. :) It was difficult for you to set the exposure to get the result you wanted. Well...this is just my personal taste, but I might perhaps like the subject to be a bit lighter.

You can make it lighter in post processing, of course. But what if you had changed some settings in your camera, when you took the picture? Maybe a larger aperture, to make it brighter? Or a slower shutter speed? I don't know how your camera works and I don't have the best knowledge about these things...but even though you took the picture at 300 mm tele, you might still have been able to use a bit slower shutter speed to make it a little brighter? Then, the subject should have been a bit lighter. And the rest of the window you could still black out in post processing - you still had to do it now... ;)

Another way to get the effect you want (that only the picture in the window shows), would be to take the picture at "normal" settings and then, in post processing, isolate the part of the picture you want to keep. In Photoshop, there are tools that help you do that. I think one of them is called "Magneto" or something similar (a lasso tool - my Photoshop is in Swedish, so I don't know the English names of the things). I have tried that one myself a couple of times and it works pretty good. Though you need to be careful and watch that just the part you want marked gets marked. If you see what I mean? :) If you are using a different editing program, you may be able to find a similar tool there.

I noticed you used a very high ISO setting. Did you notice the noise level on the original, full size picture? What is it like? Usually, high ISO settings make the pictures more noisy. I understand you are using a DSLR, which are usually better at high ISO settings than compact cameras. But if you notice much noise in the picture, and don't like it, you could try a lower ISO setting. Then, you have to adjust the shutter speed or aperture accordingly too, of course.

Well...these were just some amateur thoughts and ideas... They might be good or they might be bad... You choose how to use them. :) And maybe you knew all these things already...? :o

Maybe someone else disagrees with me and has other thoughts or ideas that are better?

Still, it's a nice picture the way it is too. :)

Wesan, thanks for your comments on my pic! I agree with you that those changes would have helped. I just kept the settings I already had from taking other shots. I was walking down the street, in the cold, and didn't want to take much time :D But I appreciate your comments because it helps me to understand what settings I can use for similar shots in the future.

And I think you did a good job on the PP for your shot. :)

I like! My new favorite is this first one, with the elderly woman in the background. I think it adds some context to the picture, as well as having the bread well lit and the candles flaring :)

I just commented on your other thread as well ... wow, you've been busy! Glad you're sharing.

X-Soft--

Nope, never been to Israel. Moved from Detroit to Berkeley California when I was 14. I've lived in San Francisco for 24 years.

Had a bit more luck today, taking pictures at my cousin's place. :) Here's one that I like:

http://hem.bredband.net/wesake/Pics/IMG_3309_rotate_crop_exposure+0.40ev_noise-removal(despeckle)_resize_unsharp-mask_text.jpg

The lanterns are standing on the floor. Took the picture using a mini tripod put on the floor. No flash. Post processing: rotated (didn't get it straight, in spite of the fact that I was using a tripod...:o ), crop, exposure +0,40 ev, noise removal (despeckle), resize, unsharp mask and text. All post processing done using ACDSee 9 Photo Manager, BTW. ;)

Here is the original picture, resized only:

Polishing the silver

F3.5, 1/60th, Flash. Tiffen closeup +4.

I was polishing the silver for Christmas dinner, and this picture just jumped out at me. I hope you enjoy it!

Wow, that's beautiful. Were you using pink and green polishing cloths? Reflections have been really tough for me ... this is really an excellent shot.

No, the colour was from other objects on the table. I had taken some with just the silverware, and they were kind of bland. So I put a red box on the left and liked the result, so I grabbed a green one and put it on the left. The flash did the rest!

I'm glad you like it... Thanks.

Dustyporch--that shot of the silverware is excellent.

These were taken with the 50mm f/1.8 lens on my new XTi. The decorations are amidst piles of crap in a junk shop display window. Kinda sweet, really.

PP: cropping, levels, unsharp mask.

EXIF: both are ISO 200 and f/1.8 at 50 mm. The tree is 1/400 sec and Santa is 1/500 sec.
