By the way were you using an IS lens?
Thanks for posting.

No Image Stabilization, just a cheap ole Quantaray 70-300! :)
Nice shots. Too bad I missed it since I was shooting at the other "smaller" air show that same weekend.

Almost forgot about this one. He was hovering (kinda) above the runway going a little less than 100mph. At least I think that's how slow they said he was going! :)

So, once again, what camera did you use please to take these air show pictures?

Thanks man! Yeah, a couple of them are definitely oversharpened, but I was too lazy to go back and fix them.

The Red Bull air race in San Diego. I had lousy technique, but got a few good ones. Another air show next month at Miramar...
Approaching the middle of three cones in a slalom.
29024
These spectators actually had the best view - sun at their back and San Diego skykine in front of them...
29025
The color of the cone determines if you pass it horizontally or knife-edge. Off by more than a few degrees, or too high or low, gets a 3-second penalty.
29026
In tight turns, pilots can be under as much as 8 G's.
29027
Hitting a pylon gets a 10-second penalty. The crew puts another pylon up in a couple minutes.
29028
Most of the planes are an Edge 540, or Extra 300.
29029
This might be the only MX2 which is slightly larger than the others.
29030
Heading flat out toward the 4-pylon "Quadro"...
29031
Top speeds are about 240 mph. Two laps around the circuit in 85 seconds...
29032
One of many demonstration fly-by's was this Red Bull Mig-17.
29033
Thanks for your pics and commentary. Your focus is spot on. Nice job.

One year ago this thread was started--that also means Aviation Nation took place again. However, this time I was able to spend part of one day at the air show. :D
A few samples though I have yet to really go through the photos since I spent today shooting college soccer. I just wish I had a longer lens for these types of events.

Not a airshow pic, but a normal end of runway approach shot. I hope to get some airshow types with my Xti next summer. Warthog coming in for some fuel in a across country flight.

Fantastic shots,
I have not been to an Airshow since i bought a digital body, so can't post any i have taken in the past.
One suggestion though, when shooting Prop Planes, try not going over 1/500th on the shutter speed, prop planes look odd flying with the propellers frozen mid air.
Cheers, ratty
This is my favorite of all planes.

The Blackbird, still the fastest Aircraft in the world, mistaken as a UFO many times because of its speed across the horizon. EG: a .357 Magnum bullet travels at 1,800 feet per second. The Locheed Blackbird travels at 3,100 feet per second or 35 miles per minute :D
The specs on it, on almost every level is amazing, but i wont go into that here :p
Although i will add this.........New York to London 1 hr., 54 min., 56.4 sec.
I've seen the "small" bird locally and in person. Just didn't have a camera then and I also didn't notice any SR-71s at the last air show I attended.

Nice work SpecialK. Good exposure and composition.
I had a tough day today at the airshow with a very thick/humid atmosphere, and backlit subjects. Nice stovepipe tornado only 60 to 80 miles north of this event.
