I was thinking about how much really nice L glass cost, like the 400 f2.8. Do people actually pay full price or do they bargain? I would have to imagine that Canon makes a huge profit on those lenses.

More often than not, this kind of lens is rented... or leased. Owning one, personally, is highly unlikely. A company usually provides several photographers access to it. That makes it far more useful and insurable.

That way, you are not soaked for the $7500 per lens cost... for the few times you may need such a beast.

I'm pretty sure CW owns the one in his gear pic. Or he's borrowing it and will be buying one. People DO buy glass like that. Several people over on POTN have 'em and aren't even professionals. They just really really like birds enough to buy a lens that costs as much as a decent used car in order to shoot them.

I got thinking when I saw CW's lens collection, expensive stuff. Thanks for the rental site, Don, it's better than Calumet.
