I've never used this lens before so it was time we became acquainted.

For so long most of my portraits have been with longer lenses - great for classic portraits but not great for environmental portraits:

I have this for the weekend, so I'm gonna try and give it a good workout and see if we like what we can get. So far I like the combination of a wide field of view yet shallow depth of field.

WOW CW, seems like a pretty schnazzy little piece of glass. Looks like the DOF wide or nearly wide open isn't horribly narrow and very usable. Bokah looks pretty nice too. Appears to have good color representation...you seein any downfalls yet???
BTW, gotta love that hair and the drooly teeth coming in smile. I think you have another catalog model in your future!

I see pretty significant vignetting. Are you adding that in post? I'm not as hopped up about unintentional vignetting as some people are, but it's just something to be noted, IMO.
Looks great though. Bokeh + wide is good sometimes. I certainly can't do that with my Tokina.

I'll clear some room in my suitcase :)

How timely! I was considering this very same lens, for the past day or so, only to be used on the EOS 20D.
If you don't mind me asking, just would you pay for this beauty?
This would be effectively the same as mounting a 38.5mm on a full frame... let's call it a 35mm for argument sake. So... how does it hold its own up against the real EF 35mm f/1.4L USM on a EOS 5D/EOS 1Ds?
You didn't say what rig you mounted this on... so in ignorance of your camera body, I ask, any side-by-sides to speak of, or are you even shooting it on an APS-C?
I have been considering this very same lens, for the past day or so, only to be used on the EOS 20D. It looked compelling at f/1.4... for indoor use.

That's on a MKIIN right Christian? (1.3X factor) DOF is pretty impressive for such a short lens.
BTW - nice pics. Such a happy baby! Must be his dad (or the hair do - what is that? ) And why isn't he out working?!? When I was his age...

Looks good. Surprised that the dof is not less wide open.

Generally speaking you will get higher resolution and less vignetting on a "35mm" lens after the crop factor on an APS-C lens than a real 35mm on a full frame body because the APS camera is only using the center portion of the lens.

Thanks JM. I'm just back from a lot of photographic miles this weekend (around 4,000 frames captured) and this lens got a bit of a workout - will report later, just got back from a 1,200km round trip.
For the pixel-peepers, the wide-open 100% crops won't scare an 85 L but for what it is (wide and fast) I think it's rather good.

Agreed - the vignetting is noticeable wide-open. If vignetting is a problem for people then this is probably the wrong lens.
For the sort of work I would use it for wide-open I actually don't mind it. For serious architecture I would normally be at f/8 or below anyway. :)

It's on a 1.3 cropper Don. After using the lens extensively this weekend I came away pretty impressed - although for some shots the 35mm L would also be very useful (perhaps more so - but I haven't used one).
I have a tonne of shots that I will post over the next few days (not tomorrow - playing golf at Cypress Lakes  ).

Yep.
Did you not notice we have TURF down now Pete? - they have been working very hard, it's only taken me four years to arrange it! :o :D
The hair: I have very curly hair (what's left of it) and Ben is the first of all the kids to have (seemed) to inherit my curls - so she's not cutting 'em off yet.

The lens I was lookin' at went for about $800... that's a little rich for me, still.
Anyway... back to the salt mines. Got a ton of photo-work to do, myself. Doesn't look good, but I'm still optimistic.
