Hey everyone!
I'm considering buying my first d-SLR the nikon D50.
At the moment im using the pana FZ30, and im curious.
Will, for example the kit lens (D50) do a batter job at blurring the background at f/4 then the pana at f/3.7 ?

The kit lens is F3.5>5.6 not F4 and it's relative to focal length.
At 50 mm yes, F5.6 will give you more blue then F3.7 on a superzoom.
I'd highly suggest the tamron 28-75 F2.8 though if you want more blur F2.8 lens on dSLR is going to be much better.

The blurring of the background is a matter of depth of field. There's an execellent on line DoF calculator at Cambridge in colour (http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/DOF-calculator.htm)
When making comparisons, remember that although you probably usually refer to focal lengths of the FZ30 in terms of the 35mm equivalent for the field of view (35-420mm), the calculator needs the actual FL (7.4-88.8mm). I believe the FZ30 has a 1/1.8" sensor.

So the size of the sensor plays a big part in DOF also?
