I can't believe that there aren't many post here regarding the Powershot G7.
I have mine and find it is the best camera I've had. I'm still learning all of it's features and was wondering....where are the G7 users and pictures?
I will post some soon.
I found the best case for it.. http://www.techbuy.com.au/product.asp?at=51&prodid=66370
Here are a few samples pics, to kick this of;

I've had mine since Oct 17 and love it!
I've also ordered that case from down under and should have it here this weekend.

Convince me it's better than the G6. ;)

Better than the G6? Cost?
It depends on what your looking for. If your happy with your G6, S3 IS, or whatever then stick with it.
It's not a continuation of the previous G series for sure, but its the best compact around.
I personally can live without RAW and a tilt/swivel LCD, but if those features are important to you then look at something else.
The IQ is very good, better than the S3 and the G6, and it has IS and Digic3.
The build is excellent and its fast and responsive.
The price has already droped to $450 and will continue to fall, just like all newley released cameras do.
Problems? The G7 has a slight shutter lag when using the flash (about .5 sec) which makes capturing action difficult.

If it comes down near the price of an S3 or an S2 i may check it out, the G6 still seems like the best G series camera.

I had a G5 and loved it and I agree the G6 is a very capable camera, the G7 just goes down a different road.
I'm very interested in the S3 IS replacement in Feb 08, it should be quite a camera if they continue the line.

Is Feb 08 a confirmed tentative time? Or just your best guess!? I do not want to wait that long.. and Since my girlfriend gets my S3 when i buy the S4, she can't wait that long either. haha.

Hello,
I'm also a new G7 owner (got it since this week).
As usual, I'll put tests on my web site http://users.belgacom.net/christophe.vlaminck/G7.html
I'm busy with adaptation of the DOF Excel file.

Hi,
THe Excel file with DOF calculation is on my site:

What is the DOF excel file? are you guys hacking the camera to create a larger DOF?

Hi,
My Depth of field Excel file is just a file that calculates automaticaly the depth of field for a peculiar [distance to subject / aperture / focal distance].
The depth of field is the distance around the subject where the subject is in focus (tipically 1/3 in front and 2/3 beyond). No hacking or things like that, just photography and mathematics :) :)

WHy do you need to know that?
xophedebx
11-27-2006, 05:03 AM
Because there is no DOF tester on that camera, and it's not always easy to see the DOF on the LCD screen. I print a sheet with some DOF I got with me in case of ( for portraits and macros). Also interesting for street photography, where you lock the focus and just shoot here and there (so you choose the hyperfocal distance or a quite big DOF from n meters to x meters)

Can you post the info? what all do you need to calculate it and stuff? sounds interesting but im still not sure i fully understand it. Might be somthing handy to know.

Hello,
Here is a link to the equations used to calculate the Depth of Field:
http://www.dofmaster.com/equations.html
I use the same into my Excel sheet. It avoids you to calculate the DOF yourself.
You may calculate it online and see a definition of it here:
http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

Can you go threw the steps on how you go about using it?
Say there is a bird on a whire about 10 feet away. Is this all the info you need? then you calculate it and look it up on the charts and then it tells you what F stop to use?

Yes,
Type the distance to subject,
Then check the focal distance (or zoom ratio)
In the chart you may find wich aperture is the most accurate to the effect you want

Have you seen these high iso links?

Why always the same problem.. noise is terrible I think.

Hello,
Noise ain't a real problem except at 1600 iso. I work often at 400 iso as I did several years ago with my argentic cameras. I got better PRINTED results now with the G7 than with my argentic Ricoh's negatives scanned (well, looking at pix on screen at 100% will always be "terrible" I think). I must confess that the grain is not the same, but I think G7 "noise" up to 400 iso may now be called "grain" and no more "chromatic noise". At 800 iso, it depends on the exposure time.
My only "better result cameras" were: Agfa Billy record with Agfa Optima 125 asa film (6 x 9 cm surface, imagine the definition) and my Rolleiflex 1934 (6x6 cm). But this was in the 20th century.
Conclusion: PRINT the test pictures downloaded at full res, or make tests yourself on a G7 to know if it fits your needs, or look at them on screen at a % relative to the printout you would do.

Hi,
For those of you who do not have Excel installed on their computer, I put a copy of a Standard DOF chart for the G7 on my site:
http://users.belgacom.net/christophe.vlaminck/DOFG7.html
It is not as cool as the Excel file, which is dynamic, but could help.
