I just inherited a suitcase of old family items from an aunty that died last November. In it I found she'd kept and treasured my very first commercial photography assignment - shooting aeroplanes at an airshow back in 1989.

The text is not what I wrote. My article was longer and it has been both trimmed and hacked about. The photos were all taken with a Cosina CT1 and a Sigma 600mm Mirror lens on Scotch 400 ASA slide film. Heaven knows why the editor converted them all to B/W. Anyway, here's my very first commercial photographs. I've shown you mine now show me yours!

That must have been a surprise to see that after all these years and an A10 in there to boot! My friend had to make a bit of an emergency landing at Fairwood after flying from Cork to Kemble..

My wife pulled the magazine out and put it to one side. My stepson wanted it but it's a family relic so I had to rescue it. I had completely forgotten that I had given my aunty a copy. In fact I'd almost forgotten that I had done that airshow. There used to be an annual airshow at Swansea airport until about 1979 then they stopped. The organisers tried to get it going again but the press contact at the airshow spent most of his time in the bar during the airshow. The local media spent more column inches describing his racist comments than on the airshow and subsequently there were no further airshows.

Local newspaper. First week I was out at the range and the editor called me, asked me to grab a few pics. Made front page on the next issue. Not too bad for a rookie. Taken at the end of March, this year.

My last assignment. Also front page of latest issue:

I gave her pictures for like, 5 events and only one of em made it. Oh well, can't win them all. My new D70s works pretty damn good. But when it comes down to making the paper, its better to have the pictures than not have them. A couple of times my random point n' shoot action saved the day.

Lastly, I've done some work for my place of employment. Out of the two CDs worth of pictures, only one of em made it. I SWEAR it always seems like the picture that you took and thought they'd never use is the damn one they love  . Oh well, thats why I ain't the editor.
