I'm a big fan of the site and visit it often. I've learned a lot here and have been saving up to purchase a Nikon D50. However, I just saw the news about the D40 and am curious about what is next for Nikon. I know it's inevitable that something will replace the D50, and I'm really not that interested in the D40 based on the specs and how small it is. So If I buy the D50 in the next 2-3 months am I going to get pissed when the next generation D-whatever comes out? I know it will be more expensive. But how large do you guys believe the gap will between the two technology-wise? I'm dying to get my hands on a D50. It's what I've decided on after a lot of research and comparing it to the Rebel XT. I'm not obsessed with megapixels but I'm guessing Nikon would make some changes there? Anything else?

Thanks

um buy the D50 now, don't wait for other cameras to come out. Shoot what you can with the camera you can get. You can always upgrade later when you think you are ready, and sell the D50 if you have to and use that money to buy the next-gen. DSLR.

Just stop playin' around, lol.

Go ahead and pick up a D50 dude, there will be great deals on it until they're all gone or production stops, if ever. According to some, it will remain in the Nikon lineup for the forseeable future. It's a nice camera and hard to beat for the money.

while i think that you have made a good decision to go with nikon, the truth is this and Cannon or Nikon or Minolta or Sony owners who really know anything, they all agree on this.

your camera doesn't make you a good photographer. period.

so my advice to you is this.
if the price is going to drop real soon, then wait for that, but then get the camera and shoot photos, alot of them and take your time doing it, don't rush. critique them, learn from them, read what you can get for free on the internet (there is alot), and read the manual (i know it seems obvious, but youd be suprised).

Always a good article to read when you start to get "analysis paralysis": http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm

I'll go out on a limb and say NO camera sold in the next 5 years will take significantly better pictures than the D50 (or the D40 for that matter). Your skill will make a much bigger difference than the body you use.

Nikon tends to have a bigger spread between models than Canon. Even so, there is always a new model in the works. You can't escape that. Whether it pisses you off is a personality issue, and no one on a forum can determine that for you.

If you're the type that always has to have the latest and greatest, please please don't ever buy anything.

Only YOU can answer that question.

I would just think of the D50 as a stepping stone into the world of dSLR since if you remain in said world or hobby, you'll probably move on to another camera body anyway. And then you can use the D50 as a back up camera or sell it, trade it, or give it away. PS: Don't forget the accessories.

I agree, the camera dosnt make the photographer good.

And to add to that, as far as you equipment gose.. the body is the last of your worries. You glass is far more importiant than the body.

I hope the D50 will still be around for a while. Im plannig to buy this camera. I've looked at all the d-SLR's and found that this one would be good for me.
I also hope its price is going to fall! lol

If you are going to use AF-D or AF-G lenses get one D50 ASAP as I don't expect to see much of them after X-mas another good option is the D70s...

If I may throw my 2 cents in. I know nothing about SLR's but I have read all the specs.
My friend's wife has a D-50, Nikon and she loves it. This is what got me started.

I have seen her shots of vacation with just the normal point and shoot mode. They were really, really nice.

I went out to purchase the same camera and got a Rebel instead, only because I got a better deal, and I had the cash.

Go buy it, you won't be sorry. I saw with my own eyes how nice it shoots.

It's best to get the model going out of style. The new ones aren't usually all that much better, but more importantly, are usually 20% or so more expensive so will have more depreciation.

Like buying a computer that's the latest for $1500, then next year the same specs sell for $700 and the new latest model is $1500. Yet, they all satisfy your basic needs.

Unless you're just rolling in $$ and don't care.

But then; if you waited 6 months you could probably save $50 on the D50 as everyone dumped their old stock. lol It never ends. Just get what you need today for what it costs today.

Note: However ... Canonites .... you think the 5D is about to go? Saw a POTN post noting that Dell stopped carrying it, and how Dell seems to get advance word on these things. Indeed; it's nowhere to be found on the Dell site.
