I took a walk about in the greenway near our apartment last week with my camera. Encountered some small bees on a bush in a cluster. I was using my D90 with 18-105VR, and popped on a Raynox 250 Macro adapter and an SB400 flash. I was impressed with the results, given I had no tripod.

K1WI, this was the view on the anniversary of Sept. 11 tragedy. Every year, the two light beams shine up to the sky as a tribute and pay respects to the good people we lost that time. Unfortunately, it was so busy day that I had a hard time trying to find a good spot to shoot the downtown Manhattan skyline showing the two beams. This was the best spot I can get it from.

Here's another shot of the Empire State Building wearing lights of red, white and blue for that day.

Just trying to learn what other people like since maybe one day I might try and sell some of my motocross pictures to magazines, sponsors, etc. It doesnt matter what the photographer likes since he isn't the one who is paying for the pictures. :p

I'm sure Rooz will chime in.. but i'll offer my humble advice.. Your first shot was okay but simply didn't have much interest- guy on a bike.. no sense of motion.. bright orange barrier right behind him (distracting). If I were you, I would position myself near the highest jump and work on nailing those shots of guys in flight (like in your 2nd shot).. Then maybe get on a hairpin corner and work on getting some shots that show the action of the guys throwing mud as they accelerate out of the berm.. Just my thoughts.. Have fun out there. :) I wish I had a track near me..

Finally got a chance to post up a couple of pictures from the motocross races this past weekend.

I hope that you don't mind and I will delete this if you want.
Both those shots caused me problems for several reasons and as it's Saturday and raining I'm sitting in front of the PC playing. I've done some experiments on your shots and I'll explain what I have tried to achieve (as opposed to what I have done).

For the jump shot that tree or whatever on the left does nothing for the photo and the marshal sitting looking uninterested doesn't help either imo.
I tried two things the first was to make the shot vertical just to see how the impression of height worked. Having the rider appearing to be jumping over the sign (in height) seems to me to make it more dramatic. For the second one I rotated the image to get the signs more or less straight and again cut out the extra stuff that imo doesn't need to be there. Rotating the image also visually makes the slope look steeper (angle of the fence posts) and more dramatic.
Shot two sort of hurt my eyes all that really dark and light. It appears to me that you were on the wrong side of the corner, it looks like the rider is turning right which means he is always going to be looking away from you and it also looks like you were shooting into the sun. Obviously you can't always be in the perfect place but I think that grass up above the front mudguard may have been a better spot if you were allowed there. For that photo I just cropped it to get as much of the background out as I could and also changed it so the rider is riding into the photo rather than being centred. I also got rid of that tape coming out of the back of the bike.

the image has context and gives us a feel for the speed, the atmosphere, the track and the danger. its just a great shot. :)

Thanks for the observations K1W1. I kind of thought the tree gave you the feeling of being far away from the jump, giving you the feeling of looking at it from afar. I have plenty of pictures of the jumps close up, and just liked the way that one came out. I do see though that for someone who would like to purchase a picture for a magazine, website, etc, the cropped shot would be much better.

As for the other picture, I was not able to get on the other side of the track. That was the only option I had, and yes, it was shooting into the sun. Most of the photos did not turn out well from that angle/location, but for some reason I really thought that one turned out well. Maybe it is just me though. :o I have a whole bunch more photos that I will take a closer look at and try some post processing this weekend. I'll throw them up in my old "Dirtbikes" thread. When I do I would appreciate your opinions.

PS: Thanks for the response as well Rooz. You posted as I was typing my post.

Yeah, I started to wait until it was gone, but I had a representative from the country club over my shoulder who thought it was awesome.

If I remember right, I used a single SB-800, PWII's with a westcott 60" shoot-through umbrella at full power. They were in the shade but the scene in the back was still very bright.

Thanks for the compliments the last couple days fellas, very motivational.

Using matrix metering in bright light on A mode you'll get something approximating F/16, ISO400, 1/200 sec or so. Manual focus, set magnification around 1:1.3, rock backwards and forwards till you get focus, frame slightly wide and shoot everytime it looks interesting or if you see it take off. After enough shots you'll have a keeper. Assuming it wasn't a rhetorical question of course.

First try at gels.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4087/5036289002_07b69b1499.jpg

I was very limited as to my lighting setup. The room I used was too small to get enough distance between the subject and the flash and at almost no power, the flash was still too strong.

I also had some issue with light spillage into the gelled flash, so I couldn't use the brolly.

Result = harsh, overpowering flash with sever shadows making her look much older than she really is.

I'll have to try it in a larger room and try get the brolly to work

Nothing special, but finally got out tonight to take a few pics. Was trying to get a little less orange "glow" from the streetlight, but no matter how I metered it I couldn't figure it out. I tried all of the tricks that I could remember from the "Understanding Exposure" book, but they didnt work. :(

I still like this photo though. I did play around with it in photoshop and liked some of the filters, especially the grain and a few others. But I just wasnt sure if I liked it more than the original so I left it.

over the weekend i'll give it a good run if the weather is good. not much to say about it really. very well built, VR, perfect range, very sharp at f4, relatively light and compact. if there are any major flaws with this lens i'm yet to come across them.

keeping in mind i'm talking about it in the context of what it is. its not a 24-70, doesnt have the 24-70 "pop" or sharpness or AF speed but its a joy to have a great quality walkaround zoom with great range. :)

Here is one of several shots of the local river after some 5"+ of rain this last Thursday. That area to the right, where the tree is is normally about 5-6' above water and now( Fri 10/1/10) has at least 18" of water there. I am standing on an artificial butte that serves as a place where High tension towers receive the lines from across the river. Those are the shadows on the water. The right bank was my fav place to shoot this past summer.

we are thinking alike. the 24-70 is going cos i expect the 35/1.4G to be superb. have never much liked using the 24-70. how are you finding the 16-35 ?

The canon ef 35mm f1.4 was close to perfection on the 5D MKII, both in terms of performance and the focal length (30mm would have been perfect) It worked quite well as a walk around lens. I expect the same performance with the nikkor on the d700.

I like the 16-35 because it replaces both the sigma 12-24 and nikkor 24-70 in my bag when I go to trackdays/outdoor events. Good things are VR, and beeing noticeably sharper than the sigma (it's also a bit sharper than the 70-300 VR). Bad things are that it's a bit softer than the 24-70, and the extreme corners isn't something to cheer about. You also get flares easily, so you have to be carefull shooting in bright light, and it's not exactly distortion free. Optically the 14-24 f2.8 beats it, except the 14-24 is even worse at flaring. I rate the 16-35 more practical in use than the 14-24, because the 14-24 is "just" (ultra) wide angle - while the 16-35 gives you that little bit extra by going out to 35mm (and I love VR)

Photozone.de review of the 16-35 is the one I've found to be most true to how I feel about the lens myself.

And I'm with you on not liking using the 24-70. There's something about it that doesn't feel right. But it performs like a champ.

yeah the 35L and 135L were 2 of my favourite lens'. Nikon should have the 35 coverered and the 85G nails the 85L. the only thing we're missing now is the superb 135L. the only issue i think we'll have is that the 135L is built for speed, teh 135DC is built for portraits; so i certianly hope nikon dont continue the DC route and cripple the lens with piss poor AF.

Photozone.de review of the 16-35 is the one I've found to be most true to how I feel about the lens myself.

thanks for the heads up, sounds like an UWA version of the 24-120/4. not up to the quality of the 24-70, but a very good performer. the only thing that irks me is the size of the bastard.

And I'm with you on not liking using the 24-70. There's something about it that doesn't feel right. But it performs like a champ.

havent found anything that performs like it yet in a zoom. but i really dont like using it and its not just the size and weight cos the 14-24 weighs the same, but the 14-24 feels perfect on the camera, the 24-70 always feels unfomfortable to me. and hell, if i wanted to feel uncomfortable and awkward i may as well shoot Canon. :D

Thank you. As far as contrast goes, I try to keep it as close to the raw file as possible, as high contrast only ruins details. But some times I go with the mainstream look at bump it up. I hate myself everytime I do, but the attention whore inn me forces me to do some popular type of editing, instead of what I like myself, sometimes :D

ANP: Thanks! I like the 70-300VR. It's just a shame it's a bit too short for me, so I have to conicder my options for 2011. I really need a 400mm, but there are no good lens options without breaking the bank so I'm actually concidering getting a D7000 to use exclusively with the 70-300vr (let the crop factor do its magic)

I must be getting old and pedantic (or maybe more pedantic?). I can really see the image degradation in these with the Kenko 1.4xTC fitted to the 70-200. Oh well I guess a 200-400 or 400 prime is somewhere in the future.

I was going out to throw out the garbage, and the first thing I saw when I opened my door was this moon. Ran straight back inn and picked up my D700 + 70-300 VR and shot at 300mm..

Absolute bastard:rolleyes:, wish I had a fraction of your skills.

K1W1, you have looked at the 400 2.8 price recently haven't you. There's a reason I didn't even ask what Rich wanted for his :(
