I didn't take these next two, my girlfriend did. I'm posting them here for her because she's not a member here (yet!) and I thought they were pretty darn good (she's relatively new to photography still). All taken with my old D50 and a 18-105VR lens.

Anco, as a car fanatic myself, I find the most appealing car shots are ones that follow the rule of thirds fairly closely (there are exceptions of course), or else ones that fill the entire frame. For example, in your picture above, I like the blurred post, but I don't like the empty space behind the car. The side of the road isn't particularly pleasing, so pan up a hair and put the car on the bottom third. Or shave off both top and bottom and fill the right third with car.

I goofed with it over lunch at work. Apologies for editting without permission

ANP That curving leading line from the bottom right works well. Is it as the camera matrix meters it or +/- exposure? Personally I might prefer the shot with the sky filtered so the foreground is comparatively lighter.

Dollface that's a good example that you can still throw your background nicely OOF with the 55-200.

DPR, the sand was very soft and was drying out the water very fast, so that part of the sand sucked in the water fast making that part dark, well I tried to keep the pic as SOOC as possible, will try to lighten the foreground and see how the results are, thanks for the words :)

Here is a wild Iris that I found growing along the local riverbank. There are two colors that are blooming there, a yellow and this blue variety.
As you can see there is a slight difference from the common shape that we usually see growing on our flower gardens.

Visiting Polesden Lacey - a beautiful Regency House which was a retreat
of an Edwardian Hostess Mrs Ronal Greville - she entertained Prices, Maharajas,
Viceroys and Prime ministers here.
This room was covered in gold everywhere!!
It was a challenge to get a decent photo - (and no flash allowed)
there was mixed lighting and not much of it - so this was ISO800
Manual White Balance.
This is the photo straight off the camera - just resized

Thanx for the compliment. I kinda got the bug bug (my pun;) ) When I first got the Fuji S700 and realized that it would take good close-up shots. Lots of small flowers and insects. Biggest problem was the shutter lag on active subjects, lost a lot of shots. Dim EVF didn't help either. I like the distance relief I get with the 70-300 Tammy. Spooky subjects like dragonflies are shootable with it.

Great macro! I've been scouting dragonflies by Central Park and I'm surprised that I can't find a single one hovering around. Maybe in my upcoming camping trip, I'll be able to join and post up more macros :D

Rich, the streetscape is North Terrace, shot from the north east corner of King William Road, looking east (and a bit south). I got lucky with the clouds giving a nice even light mid arvo. Not that it did much facing away from the sun but a polariser was on, lens 24-70.

Ever feel like your skills aren't up to the job.:(

After literally 3 hours post processing and having taken 20 initial photos this is the best I could get.

What I've learnt, don't shoot things like this on F2.8 (it's not sharp enough).
Cut the plants before you take important photos.
Keep the flashes higher up - light stands just aren't tall enough.

1 flash front left, 1 front right and one lighting the background.

jcon
06-24-2010, 01:32 PM
DPR, I think we all can relate, and if someone says they cant, they are flat out lying. If I may offer a suggestion or two... for large groups like this, I like to raise a flash up real high and aim it down at an angle ontop of the group, kinda like a man made sun, if you will. I find this helps reduce shadows on faces(like you have with the gentleman in the top right) and will also help lighten the group more. I have had this issue quite alot when photographing a roller derby team in less than stellar lighting conditions. I think your light set up is fine, but it does need one extra light. All in all, the photo isnt as bad as you are making it sound, dont be too hard on yourself!

Nice dragon Rawpaw.
I've lost most of my good perching places. NYS DEC decided to chop down everything green and growing along the local riverbank. For a change o subject here is a piece of local artwork in commemoration of a local cartoonist that published a comic strip nationally in the US. It is a statue of one of the characters in Johnny Hart's strip "B.C." This was a reference to the local area Broome County. For those not from the US A county is a local governmental division within a state. Sorry about the ramble.:D

Well you learn something every day. I always assumed that the B.C. was a reference to the time before A.D. as in the calendar system we work under. I remember reading that comic strip back in the days when one purchased a paper each day but I can't remember whether it was in the SF Chronicle or a NZ or Australian newspaper.

Probably the SF Chronicle. Actually, there is a double meaning, both were intended. For 3 decades we had a PGA tournament in Endicott, NY, about 12 miles West of me. He was a public supporter of the tournament Which was called the 'B C Open'. He made a sculpture which ws used for the trophy. After his death, and because of some financial wrangling, and a flood in'06 that rendered the course unusable that year, the tourny moved to the Syracuse area, and renamed. Well enough of the gabbing, here is a pic of an enormous blood red lily. Other pics in the flower thread.

Bought the nikkor 16-35 f4 vr today. Going to test it out this weekend at a trackday, as a replacement for the sigma 12-24 & nikkor 24-70 f2.8 setup I've been using. The focal length is perfect for cars at events, and I mostly used the 24-70 @ f5.6-f11, so I don't need a fast lens in this focal range. I'll bring the 16-35 vr, 50 f1.8 and 70-300 vr - see how that works out. It's a very lite setup atleast. I just have to see if the 16-35 comes close to the fun & fantastic colors the 12-24 renders, and the insane sharpness of the 24-70.

Quick shot with d700 + 50 f1.8 (the other d700 in the background with the 24-70 mounted)

For what it's worth I absolutely froze my tits off for 3 nights to get this shot. It was trickier than I expected. After finally getting the exposure right
- the wind would come up and start moving it.
- some other camper would drive into camp or turn on the car lights
- the battery would go flat
- I'd forget to drop the iso, etc etc.

The winning combo was about 45 minutes, F6.3 and about 8 manual strobe shots (from the same spot) at 1/4 power from the camera right. The cloudiness in places is where the milky way was.

Great shot Kiwi, but its all leaning to the right. Check your horizon and you are good to go. Here I made the adjustment. I also took out some of the blue/cyan tint in the shadow of the lighthouse.

LOL. I'd love to take the bike, but I'm still trying to get used to riding again after a long break (it was dirt bikes back in the day). I did recently take a four-day rider's course which I'd recommend to anyone who hasn't riden in a long time and/or never riden before. ;) I also took a sunrise trip up to Red Rock Conservation Area this morning; however, since I don't have the saddlebags mounted on the bike yet, I just took the point and shoot.

Anyway, try not to poke too much fun over the Canon G10 P&S photo from this morning.

I wanted to have another look at the first one on a different monitor so now I'm at work and it still looks the same.
I don't know what it is but it just looks kind of fake to me. The people particularly your son almost look like they have been superimposed on the scene. Maybe everything is just too sharp. The photo just doesn't work well for me as a nature photo, it's a great family shot though.

Cyberwlf
07-19-2010, 05:12 PM
Yeah to be completely honest I agree with K1W1 here. To me the first has also got a few technical issues too (not sharpness though), but it's too happy snappy for my mind, the second one has foreground interest, leading lines, context/better composition, contrasting colours, etc and so is a much stronger image.

Dread Pirate Roberts
07-20-2010, 02:18 AM
Thanks I think thats all fair and also educational. I was restricted by the rules what shots I could enter and definately entered shots that weren't worthy, the first being a case in point.

The fake look of my son is because I flashed them to bring out detail and he was much closer to camera than the others. That combined with the fur hood gives him an unreal look. I got the same comments at work the next day and had an "oh darn I didn't notice that moment".

personally I'm pinning my hopes on the pano in the artistic section (posted here a few days ago but with more contrast)

Anco I think you found a good leading line to draw your eye through the image, but I just don't feel a strong foreground or background element to go with it. For example a fishing rod left leaning against the rail, a boat tied to the pier or one of the wooden piers for the foreground subject and perhaps a sunset as a pretty background.
I find the beach distracting and would prefer the shot to start at the waterline.

I've been dong this for a while, and sometimes it's really difficult to get all of the elements right as your minds eye see's things that the camera can't seem to gather as I try to produce a 2D photo from a 3D image. Beach shots fall into that catagory.

Cyberwlf, Love the image and composition. I'm a big fan of sepia conversion to add age and character. Did you try this shot in B&W? Gives it a whole different mood.
