Like the alien photo. :D Nice use of flash DPR. Here's a nothing special photo that I took with my G10 (sorry guys) that I just thought might be interesting for all those thinking about video.... When I was at WPPI, the Nikon rep was pushing video to me and I mentioned that if I really wanted to go video, RED would be the way to go. In this photo that I took today at the NAB Convention, there are 2 RED cameras mounted to provide a 3D effect. Some big bucks involved in this set up.

Thanks Alana, I was kicking myself for leaving the camera on ISO 400, I check everytime now.

A set from this past weekend. A pretty mundane assignment, a gala event. The lighting scenario was nightmarish, a mix of tungsten and fluorescent so I just blasted it with two speedlights triggered remotely.

Here is one of a sequence that I shot of an accident that occurred on a local highway bridge. Truck simply toppled over (possibly due to excessive speed) while taking a curve on the bridge. Area is known locally as "Kamikaze Curve". No one was hurt but traffic was tied up for 8 hours while the truck was righted and guard rails were replaced.

I hope this doesn't transgress any local rules about firearms -- but we were only shooting at clay targets. My brother-in-law invited me to try my hand at his gun club. It's not as easy as it looks -- those pesky clay discs move pretty fast! After I had my go I did some shooting of a different kind, with my camera. Here's my niece getting some words of wisdom from her grandpa:

http://pippick.com/photos/DSC_0093.JPG

I was impressed by the strict safety rules imposed by the club and how closely all the members and visitors adhered to them. No-one was in any danger of coming to harm, except perhaps for these skydivers who suddenly appeared out of the blue, dropped from a great height by a plane from the neighbouring airfield. (Actually, they were so far away they were perfectly safe (from being shot that is!), but I had to work the photo into the story somehow. Nikkor 18-200 at maximum zoom.

Rich, Im not tryin to nitpick but her left arm(to our right) looks kinda strange to me, from the elbow down... did you do any pp to that area? It just looks strange, especially the elbow... the light fall off looks too "sharp". Her skin also looks strange to me.

With that said... I love the pose, the look and the ambiance!

*edit... my reply didnt include the image so.. I am referring to the indoor model and not "Olga". :)

I went back and looked at the RAW file and it looks the same. What you are seeing isn't light fall off- the area where it goes black is in shade and not receiving any light. I didn't do anything to her skin- what looks strange to you?

I think it is you ;) I went back again to my TIF and the NEF file to see what if I did anything and saw there was no localized imaging. Blown up to actual pixels all of the skin imperfections are still in the image and she isn't wearing heavy makeup.

If you want to see the RAW file I'd be happy to send it to you. It looks like the only thing I did was make a change to the white balance since I hadn't set it in camera to flash.

this pond is quiet and in a dark - fairly secluded, spot.
These colours are for real, no tampering, the challenge was merely to get the
exposure right!

The story..

She was back chatting the ref so she got carded. Her captain shoved her out of the way and told he to shut up and get on with the game. The ref then turned and walked back to his spot and then immediately turned again pulled the card back out and walked towards #15 amidst cries of "Send her off" from the crowd. He kept walking past #15 and carded her Goalie who was offering some advice of her own. :D

I'm not sure whether the one in the back ground was hiding a smile or shocked. I suspect shocked.

There is no justice though, They beat our team 2-0.

She did fine, she got some cracker shots. I however was lucky to have those 2 out of several hundred defects.

I'll post a couple of hers when I've processed them. Out shot by a 9 year old.:o

Mean time here's one of mine from an earlier weekend when I could do no wrong.

Must have been tired, all weekend I barely got a photo right.
DPR - there must be a load of photos you haven't shown us - every photo
we ever see of yours is top notch!!
I would be interested in the settings you use - albeit a different model ~
but I think I have finally found some solid settings that suit me with mine.
Keep posting your pics - I always enjoy them!
Oh - I am assuming that 9 yr old is your daughter....?

Here is a shot that I saw and couldn't pass up. Stopped for a meal at a local MacDonalds. Sat next to this little fellow and his mom. He was so small that he couldn't get all the way above the tray. HH, ambient light, no flash. 1/60th F5.6 Tammy 70-300 at 125/187.

I guess you are right. I think I can count myself as a newer member ;) although I regularly check the forum. I seriously like to see what you guys are shooting and I really like it. For myself, I only want to post my very best shots which are unfortunately often not as good as I wished (this forum has quite a high quality level!). Additionally I mostly shoot People and don't want that they will find their picture on the net (discreteness/privacy is a very important matter to me).

And you almost asked for a picture ;) so here it is resized (not cropped), otherwise SOOC (the guy in the background is bugging me a little, otherwise I am quite pleased how this picture turned out.)

I went to a couple of baseball games over the weekend and even got hit by a baseball. At the time I was debated on whether to take a photo of it or try to catch it. By then, it was bouncing around in the photopod and since it bounced off of me, I kept it. ;)

At the day game, the Blue Man Group also made a short appearance though I found it rather difficult to meter for their black clothing and the blown out sky.

I'm happy with this because it's shot with the 70-300 VR @ 300mm, which is supposed to be the weak point of the lens, and its of a race car moving fast shot at 1/125, AND about half the picture was cropped away (from 4000 pixels in width down to 2300) then processed and then resized to 1000 pixels in width for the web.

..AND a drop of oil has dripped down onto the front glass element. Still the lens does can do this:

I've been taking a photography class for the past couple of months, and last nights lecture focused on 'macro' photography. I myself am not a big fan, but I had a big laugh when the instructor said "to make a bug look the best and most alive in macro, the bug needs to be dead". :D

Anco, as a car fanatic myself, I find the most appealing car shots are ones that follow the rule of thirds fairly closely (there are exceptions of course), or else ones that fill the entire frame. For example, in your picture above, I like the blurred post, but I don't like the empty space behind the car. The side of the road isn't particularly pleasing, so pan up a hair and put the car on the bottom third. Or shave off both top and bottom and fill the right third with car.

I goofed with it over lunch at work. Apologies for editting without permission
