I while ago I got my hands on an old sigma 500 mm mirror lens. The weather has been bad for a month or so, but today the weather cleared up and I could test the lens for a bit.

I've heard many bad stories about mirror lenses, but I gotta say, the quality I get out of this one really isn't all that bad. Being an f/8 lens, it's quite tough to get it focussed, but when you get the lens focussed right, it's quite sharp. With some post processing, the contrast and colour are fine too.
The bokeh is rather bad, with highlights being rendered like rings, but it would be easy to remove that with some gaussian blur.

Here are two pictures I took today:

I am not Rooz either, but a good question would be, how did you sharpen it? With what program? Most of them have options when resizing, maybe experiment a little there.

Although, this does look better than the first iteration.

The site that you are hosting the images on is not a photo hosting site and seems to be heavily Flash based. If you don't already have a free account on Flickr or SmugMug or somewhere grab one and upload the same images there. I think that they will look way better.

Thanks for your comment, Jennifer.

The sharpness looks fine to me, but it could indeed be caused by the resizing. What software do you use to resize the picture?

I don't think uploading it to flickr or smugmug will help one bit, unless your picture is resized on the webserver you upload to. I assume you just upload your resized picture to the webserver and once on the server, nothing changes about it.

I use Corel's Paint Shop Pro if it only needs minor adjustments. If it's major the then Photoshop, although just a little secret between you and me... i sometimes get a little overwhelmed with photoshop...;) I know I just need to spend time in the program, but I have been so stinkin' busy with rehearsals for a few performances coming up...I know... I know...excuses...excuses...lol :)

Did you look at the site? It's a low budget community news type site.
All images appear to be resized to a standard measurement.
Many non photographic site resize images to preserve space and often that resizing is aggressive. To try a free account on SmugMug or Flickr will cost nothing and may just provide an answer so it might just be worthwhile. It will at least prove or disprove one possible cause.

I did check the website, and while it is low budget, that has nothing to do with the quality of these pictures. If you look at other pictures that have been uploaded to the same folder, you see that there's no standard measurement and no standard compression. Thus I would be highly surprised if the website does anything to these pictures after uploading.

"Easily accessed image optimization options closely tailor results to the scene at hand or the intended use of the image. Image sharpening, tone (contrast) compensation, color mode, saturation and hue adjustment is controlled by the user-selected choice of Normal, Softer, Vivid, More vivid, Portrait, Custom and Black-and-white."

you're shooting at 1.8 which is a very shallow dof and its not really the lens' sweet spot. i'd be stopping down to f2 or 2.8 even better, you will notice a significant improvement in dof and contrast stopped down a little.

there is nothing at all wrong with the flower shot you just posted from a focus/ sharpness POV imo.

goes without saying that shooting in raw will give you better all round images and more control.

They asked me
1. What joy does photography give you?
2. What does it mean to you?

On which my Input was (Check lower right part of the paper)
" According to student Abhishek Patel, capturing nature makes you a happy person. “It sensitises you towards nature and living and even non-living things. Once you get closer to nature, you feel your real existence against its vastness.” To him and many more here, it is just not another hobby. It is cherishing the beauty of the flower, solidarity of the mountain, fluidity of the river and the song of the birds.

He feel taking it up professionally will kill the joy out of the activity and hence are happy to have this hobby of a lifetime. "

Used the Kit lens at F8 ISO 400 w/SB400 flash reflected of folder mounted white paper on the right side (where flash was aimed) and Mylar sheet mounted on a manila folder on the left side. I like how the shot came out. Am thinking of printing it out and sending it to them to give to the artist. Picture on the egg is of the castle at Vyborg Russia where the missionaries work. Sir Les
03-26-2010, 11:05 AM
Went to Canberra to see the French Masters Art exhibition a few weeks ago. Whilst there I visited the Australian War Memorial, with its fascinating collection of exhibits and displays. Some of the displays are set up as a sound-and-light show, including this Lancaster bomber. The lighting was extremely dim (actually, it was darker than a dog's guts), so it was a good test of both the D80 + 18-200VR and also my hand-holding capabilities. Shot at 1/6 sec, f/3.5, ISO 1600, focal length 18mm (27mm equivalent).

I've done a bit of post-processing to lighten the image and there's some camera shake evident, but overall I think the VR system has done a reasonable job.

Where's a D3 or D700 when you want one? :p

The tubes aren't scheduled to arrive until Thursday though I probably won't play with them right away since I'll be shooting the LA Dodgers/Cincinati Reds baseball game the day before and probably three hockey games straight in a row after the baseball game. I used a large white wall behind me--about 20ft-- to reflect light from two SB800's zoomed to 105mm and mounted to two chairs behind me. It gave enough fill to keep him from going silhouette or remaining underexposed.

The room was hard to light since there was hard light coming in from a narrow row of windows near the ceiling and the overhead sodium vapors were two different colors--green and magenta.

They were cycling pretty obviously, so I was shooting at 8fps and picking the one shot where I had even color throughout the frame.

Worth mentioning that I was originally going for HDR. I have set up the D700 for 5 exposures and realised that its MUCH harder
to keep it steady for 5 shots (despite the faster FPS) than my D80 (which only allowed to bracket 3 shots). I really struggled to
get a decent HDR from Photomatix with 5 shots. Will have to resort to a tripod from now on i think...as well as making sure there
is no wind in the air (i.e. moving branches etc)

It's funny that you mention that since at the last game, one of the guys captured his first broken bat photo in over 20 years of photography and that includes a lot of sports as a professional shooter for the newspaper and venues. He was pretty excited over the deal and I was happy for him.

What do you expect, you're not a senior member :)

Many pictures in this thread don't get any comments. If you want comments and critique, it's better to post a series of pictures in a separate thread.
For what it's worth, I like the flower picture, but I feel it could use a bit more contrast. Perhaps if you use the curves tool to give the picture more contrast, the picture will work better.

I'm cheating and posting a second one. This is an older shot but I've been doing something in LR3 that I don't normally do, take more than 30 seconds to edit any photo that is. So I've been playing just to see what happens.

Rich, great edit! Nice combination of sepia-like colours and black and white. The original was great, but I think this is even better.

You are right there. I don't expect comments in this thread and the majority of my shots don't get them.
To be brutally honest flower shots generally don't do anything for me and I can't recall actually commenting on one and I don't know umijin well enough to make some tongue in check comment that could be misinterpreted.

For me it's nothing to do with "a club". If something stands out to me I try to mention it but that's not always possible here where so many great shots are posted. If something doesn't work for me I try to avoid commenting unless specifically asked to do so.

Curt I like the smooth blue colour you've achieved for the background.
I think a little more direct light on the flower itself would help it stand out.
I don't think the branch adds much, it doesn't lead your eye anywhere doesn't particularly divide the frame and isn't very attractive.
I'd prefer slightly more sharpness on the stamens.

My feelings exactly. It also helps when asking for feedback to say more than "C&C welcome." Try saying a little bit about what you were trying to do with the shots and what your looking for in terms of specific feedback, such as composition, exposure, etc.

I guess it's after midnight and I can post one of the photos. :D By the way, she likes hockey so I chose that particular photo instead of one of the more formal looking photos. I just wish the dang glass wasn't so scratched up, but that's hockey.

I liked it but what do I know -- I'm not a senior member either! :p

Seriously, there are so many great photos posted here that it's almost a surfeit of riches, and whilst I may think to myself, "That's nice!", I usually don't post to say so or else I'd be doing nothing but. However, from time to time I'm moved to respond to something that strikes a chord. It usually involves partially unclad, good-looking women. ;)

I know what you mean and feel the same way. If I had "staged" that photo, I would have definitely wanted a new piece of glass to get a better reflection and wanted nobody else in the reflection. I just felt that if I asked him to move (he was the escort provided by the venue) then I wouldn't have been able to get a candid photograph. In retrospect, I probably should have just asked him to move after I took the first photograph.

TNB: I like the shot of miss nevada. She's looking so elegant, and she's at a hockey match. The absurdity of it intrigues me.

ATLPIKMAN: Nice image. If I was you, I'd prop up the stem with something and get a shot directly from above, so the stem wasn't showing. It just looks like it could be worth the effort.

is that a helmut hes wearing ?

kjmdrumz3

He wears a helmet because the back of his head is a little flat. When he was born, he could only turn his head to the right because his muscles in the right side of his neck were really tight. He has to wear the helmet until 18 months. And no, it doesn't affect his brain. :D

While on 'Walkabout' Thursday, I spotted one of our most common snakes sliding along through the grass. It stopped and reared up its' head. "Lets see, how close will it let me get?" Very close as it turned out.:D Tammy 70-300 on Macro, near minimum distance. BTW: actual size was around 18" Half a meter. These Garter snakes are common non-poisonous US snakes.
