Her is one of many shots from today as I went out to document the results of an all night rain here in the Northeast US. The area of trees is normally several feet above the water level. In fact Sat. I took a few pictures of a father and daughter out on 4-wheelers in what was left of snow. One shot is here for comparison. Not the best for comparison but where the truck is is under about 3-4 feet of water.

It was a lot worse before the iMac. I got rid of a lot of clutter just b/c i felt like the 27" deserved to Own the space.. haha. And i actually had to take the upper part of my desk off because the screen was so large  ..you can see the holes under the monitor.. that's where poles used to go up and hold two shelves and my printer.. lol. I have an executive desk which at times appears too small especially when both cats decide they want to camp out on it. Of course the widescreen TV, 24" monitor, Wacom tablet, PS3, camera battery chargers, and so on each take up room. But hey, a guy has to be comfortable when checking out photos and surfing the net. ;)

Took a different type of photos for me today.... People in a studio in a non sports setting. I guess I really need some brushups when using a light meter, the pocket wizards, and some studio lighting. Oh well...

There was some processing done to it. Nothing crazy really. A little noise reduction, some color balance to take out some of the red cast (I still need to work on my custom White balance settings for this picture control), minor curves and levels adjustments and voila!

man, I try not to use my D700 at 3200, that's impressive.

I was shooting in caves that day! ISO5000 with the 70-200 wide open and I was hardly getting a 1/60 shutter speed. I don't take the D300 up to ISO6400. The colors go straight to hell at ISO6400. ISO5000 is still okay, but you better get your exposure spot on (ie. slightly overexposed).

Of course I then went out to Calumet Photo and tried out the D700 with the new 70-200 VRII.. F@ck me was ISO3200 clean. I had to put that combo down right away and walk out of the store before I got myself into some serious trouble.

One of 3 things has to happen:
1) I buy a camera with better high ISO performance
2) I buy Noise Ninja
or
3) I pull my head out of my butt and remember to change my ISO after shooting in low light and then moving outdoors. This is the second set of shots I've destroyed with bad noise.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/4366353021_5109928598.jpg

On a side note, has anyone else noticed that a D60 has a terrible time with choosing white balance in the shade in snowy conditions? Or am I doing something wrong (WB set to automatic)? My pics are always very blue toned.

DPR;
At least you have walls to hang yer pics.
I notice that most of those hanging appear to be wide format. Is that what you shot mostly? or did you crop them to that? Like the wide format, especially for landscapes.
Here is another sepia-toned house in my area, on the opposite corner from the previous one. The two houses make a very distinctive corner. I tell friends to look for the house with the triple columns, makes it easier to find my street. No, I don't live there although I know the owner and watched him restore the place after he bought it a year and a half ago.

ROOZ: those last images where really nice. The 105 VR looks like a real performer, and the IR image is just awesome.

Didn't do anything special today myself, just some gear testing. After having drooled all over the 70-200 VRII for a while, I started reading up
on the 70-300 VR and looked at what people managed to do with that and a D700 - so I bought one, hoping it would satisfy my needs for
a tele lens for trackdays this summer.

Went over to the freeway and shot at various shutterspeeds. 1/125 to 1/160 is the "safe zone" for me, if I want almost 100% keepers.
While 1/60 and 1/80 gives me quite a few misses. About the same experience I had with the canon ef 70-200 F4 IS (except the canon is
sharper)

Nothing special - just one test shot: 70-300 with VR on "normal", F13, ISO 100, 1/80 shutter, 210mm:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/markryder/1-80f13mm210.jpg

For sunny days I'll have to get a ND filter to get the lens to stay below F13. Almost all shots (of dark colored cars, in the shade, aswell)
were in the F11-F14 range.

Also tried 3D tracking for the first time, and it got easily confused by things both in the foreground and background of the subject. I was
not impressed.

Nothing serious, again - just testing more gear :D My nose is almost touching the lens.

D700 + sigma 12-24mm @ 12mm. ISO 1600 (no noise reduction applied) f4.5

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/markryder/sigma1224.jpg

12mm on the D700 is awesome! Just got the lens today, so don't ask me about my opinion of it because I havn't used it enough to tell you. Only thing I can say is that it suffers from bad CA's, but that was expected (and easily corrected) and - as you can see - there's quite a bit of vignetting going on. Other than that, it's just a fun lens I'm looking forward to using more.

Oh, and.. ISO 1600 and no noise reduction, did I mention that? Love my D700 :)

I know it's similar to the previous one but I think I like the colour of the Iridium on this one better, and I want to prove to Rooz the last one wasn't a fluke. :)

care to share any tips ?

No! :D

The face on ones like above are all 70-200VR. It's the first time I've actually carried it on the bike so I wanted to see how well the focussing worked and picked a slight corner and the end of a downhill straight. The bikes were coming down at I guess somewhere between 80kph (the speed limit) and, lets say faster then turning slightly right for the corner.
Bright light, no clouds around 35C and about 2pm.
The first shot was ruined by super bright headlights on a Honda. The auto metering screwed up big time so I went to M, iso 400, f5, 1/800, 175mm then tracked the bikes as they came towards me (kneeling about 1.5 metres beside the road, portrait mode) and as they lent into the corner click. Simple really and shit that 70-200 can focus fast. It's pro lenses for me from now one simply for the focus speed improvements.

Was that the day a lady was killed by debris?

No, I was there Friday and the accident happened Sunday. In the first picture you can see the yellow trailer at the end of the track, that's where she was killed and also where I was with my wife and son most of the time. The second pic is the car that lost the tire on Sunday.

I ran into the same thing taking tennis pictures with the 70-200. It's f***ing marvelous at focusing but I had to use manual exposure mode because the metering was fluctuating too much even with ev @ -7.

this is one of a number of pics that I took today after the blizzard of yesterday had blown itself out with a total of some 16+inches. As you can see the sky highlights are blown out. tried everything that I knew (not much) to fix a problem which showed up in all the pics shot in late afternoon shots taken today. Dull grey snow. Other pics taken earlier with no sun in the sky were correctable to acceptable appearance. This one I picked because it shows well the crest of the drift. The top of the drift is about 3' high (1 meter to you metrical folks;) ) would I have had better luck in PP if I had shot it RAW?

jcon

Yes and no. RAW allows you to do quite a bit more than jpeg, but if something is completely washed or blown out, its nearly impossible to recover it, RAW or not.

Dread Pirate Roberts
02-26-2010, 07:24 PM
Looks like a black and white shot to me with nothing in between. Your camera will struggle.

If you'd exposed to avoid blowing the sky then you'd still have detail there and the trees would still be all black, I think that would have been better.

Falconest174
02-26-2010, 08:33 PM
It was blown out in PP not original exp. Caused by trying to get the snow to look as white as possible. Sorry if I confused you. Usually any PP to correct for poor exp. of snow scenes is done quite easily by ACDSee. This must be beyond its ability to fix.

If you have either Photoshop or Nikon Capture NX2 you can do selective editing which would solve your issue.

You are VERY close.....It does have something to do with a cylinder head. It actually bolts onto the exhaust manifold.

And yes, it is FP. Stands for Forced Performance. (That should tell you exactly what it is ;))

Thanks. They showed part of the olympic gold medal game pre-game here and some hightlights as well on the big screen. The smaller televisions throughout the arena also had the game on during the break. I ended up catching the winning goal (or losing goal depending on how you look at it) between periods in today's local game. Could pretty much hear a pin drop at the time.

Anyway, here's a photo from today's game. Talk about facial expressions. ;) By the way a few of my US Open Taekwondo photos also ended up on the Olympic Team USA's website. :D

I'm not really sure though it may be the reflection from what appears to be a clear vase. Perhaps, the "flash" lighting simply gave off a blue tint. I didn't have on a blue shirt, the nearby wall was gray, the ceiling white, the table red with brown wood trim, the chairs dark red, and neither cat has a blue coat, etc. I had two small speedlights on the R1C1 kit and hand holding both a SB-900 and SB-800 with the white bounce cards out. I was trying to bounce light everywhere since I figured I'd rather look like a dummy at home than out and about later at the conservatory or in the field. :D
