it isnt a large aperture lens so in low light it will struggle purely for that reason. that has nothing to do with the quality of the images the lens produces though.

remember we're talking relative terms here. its a $150 lens. i'm by no means saying that its as good as $1000 lens but for what it is, it's pretty damn impressive.

if you want a good low light lens think about the cheap 35mm f1.8DX. great lens in low light cos you can improve your shutter speed and lower you iso.
Sorry, I guess I should have said the the lens blows for what I was trying to use it for. Yes, I will be picking up the 35mm DX F1.8G for $200 soon. I am hoping around X-mas time or a little after. I have yet to use the kit lens outside in the sunlight, so I am sure that it will do much better out there. :)

And yes, I live in quite a nice place. It is a "New York Style" loft apartment in downtown Milwaukee above Boston Store. This place is nice, and ain't to shabby for my first place. ;)

Thanks for all of the info. Again, sorry that I ruffled everyones feathers by saying the kit lens stunk. :p

I went to the local skateboard park and tried shooting some photos. Since I had to have the shutter speed extremely fast, all my pictures turned out way to dark.

Did you try exposing the shots correctly and panning along with the skaters?

Exposing as in? I tried adjusting everything I could think of from Exp compensation to apeture value to "Mode" Nothing seemed to work. Unless the shot was 1/2 sec or longer, even just a still shot would turn out dark.

The point is, when you pan you can use a longer SS because you're moving with the action. Was the aperture wide open and the ISO cranked up?

I tried moving with the subject, but I didn't do so well with it. I will have to practice more when there is more light to get the hang of it.

Now that I think of it, I think I left the ISO on 100 the entire night. :o

Edit: Yup, just checked and it was at 100 . The aperture was wide open though.

I dont recall the technical term but there is a special focus option for panning that you could try, focus lock or tracking focus.. i dont recall, maybe someone else can help with it.

Why do Cricket players wear pads? That's a 5.5oz (156gm) leather covered cork filled ball hitting his patella at around 50mph (80kph). For those in the know he survived the LBW appeal.

They do look great Rich, timing, framing nice work.
Thought the ball was heavier, a baseball is 5 oz.
Starting to see more and more wear some type of
protective gear.

K1W1
12-12-2009, 03:29 AM
Yeah, OH&S gone crazy I guess. Tim is wearing the pads, helmet and gloves but he also has an "anatomical protector" on plus a thigh pad under his trousers on his right (forward) thigh. Some batters also wear another thigh pad on the inside (forward facing) side of their rear leg plus a chest protector and a guard on their forward forearm. Once you get to senior levels that ball can be coming at you from 22 yards away at 90mph+.
Now when I was playing Cricket it was pads, gloves and maybe a protector. the odd kid got a whack on the head or a broken forearm but that was what happened when you played sport.

BTW. Not only did I get some good ball on bat shots today but I also made the bat disappear without Photoshop. :-)

My favorite, too. Was on hands and knees in the snow.
Camera scooped up snow on the front of the lens so I had to undo my coat and reach inside to my t-shirt to wipe some of the stuff off the front element. not the best thing to do I know, but I only had the camera with me and nothing else. Fortunately it wasn't that cold (35F). It has been cold enough the last 3 days so that the river has already picked up ice on the shoreline and some pan ice was coming down with the current.

How large of a print? First thing I would do is clean up the sky, it has several dust spots! Then straighten as its a little crooked. I also might add just a tad of "glow" to bring the warm feel up a notch. Other than that, its all personal taste and is entirely up to you.

It may just be a setting that was not adjusted properly. The D300 has such a complex focusing system that it just takes a lot of time to get it set up right. Do you have a custom shooting menu set up for action/continuous AF shots?

Also, depending on the lens you used, that could have been the problem.

I remember growing up, one of my high school teachers had a BMW motorcycle. It looked nothing like this. All black and HUGE. It was pure and simple an open road cruising machine. You still don't see a lot of them here in the US, though they may have more on the East coast. It does look a little funky with the red faux splatter guard above the black one close to tire. Kind of a belt and suspenders thing. ;)

I went to high school in Berkeley, California in the 1970s. My chemistry teacher drove an enormous black BMW. The back wall of his room had a larger than life-size poster of the bike. One of my first hockey shots with the Sigma 70-200. Shot at ISO 800, its a little noisy. I tried Photoshop CS for the Mac, but the stock despeckle filter seems to kill a fair bit of detail. Anyone recommend a good noise filter for the Mac (Photoshop plugin or other)?

The despeckle filter is useless for dealing with noise (it works okay removing dust and other stuff--speckles--from scans. When I did some research, it looked like Noise Ninja and Neat Image were rated about equally. I went with Neat Image simply 'cause I got a good price. I use it with Photoshop CS3 on OS X. It works great but like all noise reduction programs it can be easily over done.

I second the suggestion of NeatImage. I have both NeatImage and NoiseNinja and to be honest, I prefer NeatImage alot more than NN. I think they both have free trials so give them a test and see which you prefer.

As for this shot, I dont see much noise but it is underexposed and that will always render more noise.

Thanks for the suggestions on NeatImage and NoiseNinja everyone. For some reason, I thought both were PC only plugins, so I'll grab demos of each and give them a try.

As for the underexposure, I had to dial that in to speed up the shutter. ISO 800 is about max for my D60. 1600 is just too noisy for small crops. I didn't think the underexposure was too bad, however I did the PP on my G4 without the external monitor hooked up, so I wasn't real sure what I was getting. It looked good on my wife's PC laptop though, so I thought I'd about nailed it. Back to the drawing board :)

DPR, nice shots. I like the contrast on the basketball shot. The colours are perhaps a bit surreal, but I don't think it's over the top. Perhaps I would try to selectively lower the saturation of the floor, but for the rest of the picture I would keep contrast and saturation as it is here.

Thanks to you and Rich but I'm not really happy at the moment with the results. I think the TC combined with having to take every photo at 200mm is doing something to the IQ. I think next Cricket season something longer will be in order I just now have to convince SWMBO that because I got $200 for one photo I need to spend $8500 on a 200-400VR. Shouldn't be that hard. :(

Great lizard Alana, nice work with the 18-200.

Mugs, don't be down on yourself. And if you don't mind a suggestion. One thing I've worked out is wrong with many of my photos is a brighter background than subject. Once I stopped doing that so much I was much happier with my own shots. Sometimes that means, spot metering the background and then popping up the flash with my subject under the metering point.

Wow, great exposure!

Preparation

Not a great shot, and definitely not my favorite from the series. You'll probably see more later.

Nice! I don't know if its my monitor or what, but the bottom section of the image is completely black for me. If its supposed to be completely black, you could probably crop some of it off. If not, then I really need to calibrate this monitor! :p

Amazing shot Polvadis, the framing is nicely done.
Fabulous shot Cincy

Nice landscape! Is the vignetting intentional? I would try to remove it if not, its a bit distracting in this shot IMO. Great shot regardless, though!

Nice work! Were the speedlights bare, or did you use any type of diffuser? I looked through your flickr stream, a lot of those shots came out really good.

Thanks Turo. They were bare, set to 1/4 power @24mm (wide) and had one set up at each corner of the court. I could shoot from half court to the nearest goal to me which was pretty good. I had them each on stands set as high as they could go angled down. I may try some shoot through umbrellas next time just to see what it does but to be honest, I think practicing my timing shooting basketball players will do me more good than tweaking the lights :p. With remote flashes, you only get one shot each time.

Very true, that's the thing about sports, you can't just ask them to "hold that pose for a minute", lol. I would try some simple diffusers a bit, only so you can try and soften the shadows a bit.

Is that possible? Woulnt umbrellas be a huge distraction not to mention be an obstruction for the fans? Aside from photography, sports is my life and I dont recall ever seeing umbrellas or softboxes courtside!

I would try some diffusors though, because the harsh shadows are very distracting, atleast in the two samples you posted here.

At the time I took this shot it was about 23F but the wind made it feel much colder. Fresh 3" snow put some 10-12" on the ground. Makes beautiful landscapes if you can get out in the cold to shoot them. Shot looking South over the partly frozen Chenango River.

They're both lovelly cameras. I prefer my D300, I like the size and extra buttons.

I never got around to setting up my D300 function buttons like I should have (so I don't miss as much of my cameras functionality as others might).

The D90 is still easy to change aperture, WB, ISO, flash and exposure. That's what I'm pleasantly surprised by.

I don't know how to turn off the camera picking autofocus points though. I want a single spot, with its position controlled off the toggle on the back, the way I have my D300 setup. I've gotta learn this.

We do generally stay indoors and this heat is why almost everything here has air condition (bus stops, pedestrian crossings, metro stations etc)...though just heat is not much of an issue, it's the humidity that makes life difficult....and running naked would land us in jail... ;)

I don't know why, but whenever I see a beach photo from the east coast I always expect the water to be on the right side of the sand. It must have to do with me living on the west coast, looking at the map, the water hits the east coast from the right. It seriously throws me off a little when I see a beach photo that's "reversed" :p

I agree with the implied sentiment. However, I also have a problem with car drivers that don't think bicycles have any place on the road. I was in the left turn lane (that's the right turn lane in those countries that drive on the "wrong" side of the road ;) ), and this clown in the car behind me swings wide to try and blast around me (sorry, but I'm already pedaling as fast as I can, because I don't want to hold people up more than necessary, but by law, I am a vehicle, and I do have a right to use the left turn lane). He ends up swinging so far wide, that he conflicts with the oncoming left turn lane. They both get stuck in the intersection because this Bozo cannot take the extra few seconds to wait for me. I was laughing so hard I nearly fell off my bike. But, I did keep going and cleared the intersection. I only feel sorry for the poor sap trying to make a left turn from the other side. He didn't deserve to get held up by some jerk's road rage.
