With that shutter speed and aperture (and still being well exposed), did you also use a ND filter? If so, what was it, and if not, was it night time? :)

This was shot inside Santa Maria Maggiore, the largest church in Rome. I desaturades everything but the eye painting to give it a sort of mystical feel, like the eye was glowing.

I like this shot but two things stop it being a killer:

1 - The two trees are cropped. Would have liked to see them in full
2 - The time of day the shot was taken...high sun

I'm still getting used to the D700 as I've only had it for a week. The metering system is quite different to my D70s as the D70s tried to expose for the highlights which often meant slight underexposure. The D700 metering is pretty much spot on, although does result in some blown highlights more often than my old D70s. Here's a shot with the AF-S 50mm f/1.4G and SB600 bounced to my left. I was lucky to capture his expression as it was so quick.

New poster here, guys. Poked my head out the door here in Adelaide, South Australia about 7.15am the other day to find everything eerily still, warm, foggy and wet. Converted the original colour jpeg to grayscale to invoke the spooky 'film noire' look. Just over the hill is the Bates Motel............:)

Taken with Nikon D80 on tripod, Nikon 18-200 VR @ 18mm, ISO320, 1/30 @ f/3.5, Program mode.

Those dragonflies are hard to sneak up on, when I shoot them I just find a spot to sit where they are flying
around and wait for them to land nearby. It is a challenge for me because I have to be about 18" away for my set up to work.

Thanks everyone!

I'm actually fortunate I spotted this one near the walkway so I didn't have to lean in too much to get closer to it. I spent nearly 5 mins trying to get the sharpest shot possible of its face, and from the 15+ frames, this is the only one that came out the sharpest.

It was the most patient dragonfly I've ever shot up close. Unfortunately, I tried getting a different angle and I leaned my elbow on one of the railings. As soon as my elbow landed for a firm support, it created a vibration that set the dragonfly flying away LoL :o

Is it lense distortion or is the camera tilted or have you been hitting that glass of wine? I'm in the process of getting tiltted right now but I will try to help.

what photo shop do you have?
I have PS elements 6.
It looks like like the camera was tiltted. If that's the case there is a simple tool called the Straighten Tool. Find a line in your pic that should be horizontal. All you do is click on a start point and drag a line to an end point. and there you go. The problem I see with your pic is the top of the building is close to the top border.

As far as Correct Camera distortion in elements 6 it is located under filters. Click on it and it will bring up a screen with a grtd on it. Just try the different sliders and see what each one does.

In this case I dont think this tool will help. Try the Straighten Tool first.

Guys, Today is one of the Most Celebrated Sacred Festival related with God called "Janmastmi" in my Country.
So a Happy Janmastmi to You and you Family.

What you are seeing in this picture are kids making Pyramids (climbing on each other) to reach a high spot where the grown ups hang a Pot made of mud in which there are sweets, chocolates, butter (the God celebrated here used to like Butter a lot) and many fruits, the kids have to reach that pot and break it and share the feast, in Bigger metro cities, the Pots are hung as high as 6-7 stories high, where you can see the biggest pyramid formations in the World.

I'm happy people self sensor explicit shots but what passes for normal images in western countries shouldn't have to be sensored just because of a few restricted countries. Far more explicit shots are viewable on any magazine rack in my country and we have fairly tame sensorship laws compared to Sweden and Germany.

There was some talented photography behind making that image (and an attractive model).

Hi everyone,

I just came back from my vacation in Australia. It was absolutely fantastic, Australia is a really beautiful country.
Here's a picture I took of Uluru (Ayers Rock) during the sunrise. When we were there the sunset was rather dissapointing because it was too cloudy. The sunrise on the other was fantastic. It was a bit rainy, which is why you see the rainbow, but the clouds had broken enough for the sun to shine on the rock and enhance it's colour.

I have many more pictures but I haven't edited them yet, because I have to prepare for some exams. You can expect many more pictures in a week or two :)

You lucky bastard, you know how rare it is to get a rain sunset rainbow picture there. I know Australians who have lived near there and boast if they have ever seen that.

Thanks herc and others who commented. It probably is one of my best shots. As for the chairs/dock in the background, I did consider cropping it out, but felt that a) reducing the amount of land at the top of the shot would make it a bit more unbalanced, and b) I kind of like the added punch of colour that the chairs add. That being said, I'm sure I will play around with and see what happens.

@ K1W1: Gee, that brings back memories of my schooldays in London, only then we still used the old heavy leather balls that weighed a ton when they got wet (and made you see stars if you attempted a header). Great shot!

ok so I think I forgot which forum I was in.. this kind of thing has been covered in the Canon thread and so I thought it would "click"... my bad. I posted a pic or two of some females with not a lot of clothing on in that thread and got denounced for it - and I ceased such activity thereof, fine. But it did not shoo me away from the forum. Yeah, I was really lucky. As we were driving to the sunrise viewing location I didn't expect the lighting to be any good. It was still really cloudy. I had set up my tripod next to the fence and waited for quite some time for good light. Then suddenly the sun shone through a small gap in the clouds and the rainbow appeared. A few minutes later the light was gone and in a few seconds the rock changed back to a duller shade of red again and the rainbow disappeared.

the oversaturated red kills it for me. take that same shot into Photoshop (or whatever), turn down the reds, and the texture of the mountain appears, like some kind of magic.

do it selectively to preserve the rainbow.

@ Rasidel Slika: You've obviously never been to Uluru. The rock changes colour dramatically between black and bright orange within a few minutes at sunrise and sunset, and that red colour is REAL. I've been there, and was staggered at the amount of colour change in such a short time. The only way that picture could have been more spectacular was if it had been raining at the same time. After rain, water just cascades off the rock in huge waterfalls. Now THAT would be something to see!

@500mL: Fantastic close-up on that dragonfly. It's amazing and revolting all at the same time! :)

And btw, I don't think Cyberwlf was a finalist in the Nikon Photo Contest -- he just provided a link to the winning shots.

guys, I apologize for the Uluru comments.

I just installed a new HP 2475w monitor and I can see the texture and detail of the rock quite clearly, and it is not blown out. I'm guessing this has to do with gamut, eh. I almost never deal with bright reds on my pictures so that's probably why I never noticed it before, on my old monitor.

I haven't had much success taking shots with these buggers even when using the 70-300 VR. Just now that I was able to take my time and be more patient (and quiet). They're always so tough to focus especially when there's a slight breeze that shakes the branches nonstop.

I havn't taken a shot in so long I need to give more time to photography! I was bored and have been reading www.stuckincustoms.com.

So i've been playing with some HDR and here is an old one from my D40 that I made into a tone mapped single raw file. The original was had very little contrast due to the direct sunlight.

Gen2roller, I like your image. I think the dark land works in this case. The only thing I would change is to darken the brightest cloud just a little and to remove the pink cast in the sky (though that could be caused by my screen too).

I like the first one better, although the bird in the sky is a bit distracting.

Confused about the colors; interesting, but I don't think the choice fits your land(sea)scape. Also you're bisecting a bit too much; horizon cutting right through the middle of the photo generally isn't as visually interesting as it could be. They're interesting photos tough.

K1W1
08-26-2009, 01:58 PM
Try cropping about half the sky off the first one (say just above the head of the person on the right) I think it will accentuate the sweep of the land better and you won't have that dead space up top where the bird is.

Available all year round from the shops.
Wild corcodiles are protected just like Aligators are in the states, this is farmed meat. It's $25/kg from specialty butchers only and tastes like chicken you can buy for $10/kg so it is a treat for fun.
Wild Kanagaroos can legally be hunted, you just need to find a farmer who will tolerate shooters on his property. It's the same price as beef available in all supermarkets, very tasty - a bit like venison.
Buffalo, no idea it's probably imported from the USA EDIT, I'm an idiot, water buffalo not Bison, thanks K1W1.

Gotta love being able to eat your national symbols.

Buffalo was wild Buffalo from the Northern Territory where they were a pest. I'm not sure whether the shot them all out or not but I guess there would still be some there used for farming purposes at least.

Edit: BTW PETA is a radical and sometimes violent animal rights organisation. Check their web site (http://www.peta.org/).

I took the pic below yesterday. I know it's very ordinary but I learned a few lessons from it, including the fact that shooting a black bird against a grey-white overcast sky does nothing towards retaining detail. :(

Well lets see;

You will love the IQ
You will love the focussing speed
You will love the build quality

Your other lenses will start to seem "inferior"

You will start looking at 24-70 f2.8's
and
14-24 f2.8's
and wondering whether, after the divorce and alimony payments are taken into account you could actually stretch to a 200-400 f4 and if maybe you will just have to settle for an AF-S 300 f2.8 VR.

Ever heard the saying "Buyer beware"? It has nothing what so ever to do with shoddy goods it refers to your first pro glass purchase.
