You should treat these like panoramas.
Set the camera to M (manual) and set an aperture and shutter speed manually otherwise what happens is there are small variations in the exposure for each shot.

I would shoot this from a lower angle - get on your knees! And maybe a bit more from a side angle to see the disc's path.

you put two metal trash cans about 50 feet apart and throw ultimate frisbees at them. if you hit it you get one point 2 points if it goes in the top. also you have partners and your partner can help hit it! Its quite awesome if you love disc golf or ultimate.

This is a great shot. Your composition is great. Did you use your circular polarizer? It looks like you underexposed the foreground in order to keep the sky, which is a good strategy. But then you really need to boost the foreground in PP to bring the shot back to life.

I played with it a little here. Hope you don't mind. This is mostly just curves and saturation, nothing you couldn't do with a cheap or free PP program.

thanks for your input toriaj
i can see what you're saying about boosting the foreground so i gave it a shot in lightroom. It was kind of a gloomy day so i was trying to keep it as close to real as possible

looks good, scottman. I like your edit better than mine. It looks like you ran into that same yellow tone in the brighter greens, I'm not sure where that comes from but I'm sure it could be reduced with effort. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Prospero
05-20-2009, 01:33 PM
In photoshop you could fix the yellow tone by using the hue/saturation tool. Using this tool you can select the colours you want to edit, and then use the hue slider to turn the yellow into green.
Having said that, I think the greens look natural in the last edit. The picture still lacks a bit of contrast, though. I think the contrast (particulary on the rocks) is better in Tori's edit. If you keep the saturation of the trees down, I don't think giving the rocks more contrast will reduce the gloomy look you are after.

Last week I finally took some landscapes shots again; since January I hadn't shot any, because there were hardly any interesting sunsets in these months (on the days I had time to shoot, anyway).
I was a bit too late for the sunset, the colours were much better earlier.

This one was a 5 second exposure at f/9 and ISO200. I edited the picture with Capture NX.

the first is cropped to try and make the composition a bit more interesting. its cropped down from a landscape to a portrait orientation, so i guess thats about a 30% crop ?? but yeah, i could get very close to it.

this lens is hell sharp from f5.6-8. i did cheat a little on these pics, they both have 3px high pass sharpening. its not a huge difference but its noticeable.

Thanks Accord and TheKoopaBros :)

Great shots, Rooz. The detail is fantastic.
TheKoopaBros, I agree with Kiwi's suggestion. The colours and exposure are nice, but due to the composition the picture lack depth. If you make a panoramic crop it will look better.

The following picture was a combination of two shots, one with a 5 second exposure and the other with a 15 second exposure. I edited both in NX until the colours were just about the same. I liked the sky of the 5 second exposure better, because the clouds still had some detail. However, the land was very noisy because I had to boost the shadows a lot. So, I put in the land of the 15 second exposure in photoshop. There's some motion blur, due to the wind, but I don't think it's a bad thing here.

photowerkz, my opinion is a little different than what others have said. The image has way too much grey. The car doesnt capture my eye/attention. I keep wandering up towards the top of the building. I think if you did something to draw the attention to the car, it would be very impressive. Maybe lighten the car a bit and darken the background a tad? I dunno, just my thoughts.

Cyberwlf
05-21-2009, 03:44 PM
Yeah i feel though its not the exposure levels of the building but more the contrast/focus of the building renders it so sharply...in some ways thats a good thing with the windows, but in other ways i find it distracting, even though the car is quite sharp too. Maybe as jcon said having a duller image for the building might solve all this.

Mogrify is a plugin for Lightroom that allows you to do all sorts of things at export. In this case I added two borders the large black one and the narrow white. You can also add text, watermarks, apply sharpening, resize, change ICC profile, over print metadata (that's something people ask about from time to time) and other things I don't know about yet all automatically as the image is exported from Lightroom either to your hard drive or in this case directly to Flickr.

Wow panoramas can take a while to process (9 shots into a 50 mega pixel final image).

I'm going to have to try this again, it's fun and a bit outside my comfort zone.:)

Manual exposure to keep all shots the same, should have used a vertical shot format though. Note how the polariser contributes to the change in sky colour at the fixed exposure as I turn away from the sunrise. The shots about 180 degree field of view with the polariser being strongest around 90 degrees.

DPR....very nice panorama....I really like the perfect reflection you've got....just a few pointers...

When shooting water, try not to frame the water close to you cause the stitches in the water are more easily visible there due to the movement in the water....so in the above shot, you'd be better off cropping the bottom by about half a cm....I think I can see two stitch marks there...
If you really want to frame that section, then a ND filter is your best friend... :)

This shot is a perfect reflection shot, the rock on the left does not IMO belong in this shot...

I hope you don't mind, I just wanted to post an example of what I was talking about with shadow/highlights.

I kept the left side of the image dark intentionally, to enhance the effect which was there in reality. The reed which is blown this way by the storm of the previous evening was lit by the sun, while the reed which was still standing was in it's own shadow. I kept the foreground bright because I thought it added depth to the picture. I thought the dark left side also enhanced this effect. I can see that this decision probably does not work for everyone.

Thanks for your comment, though. Looking at it again, I did notice a blueish color cast in the foreground; I fixed that now.
I don't mind you editing my picture at all.

eh, its a cheap TC so it focuses really slow, but it takes decent shots, they seem to loose some contrast though. You also really need to use it on a tripod or monopod, 400mm is pretty long.

I think i might rent a nikon 1.7x TC just to try it out and see how much better they really are.

Rooz
05-28-2009, 03:44 PM
brandon, assuming you have the af-d version of the 80-200, the 1.7tceII will not fit cos the rear element of the lens will hit the front element of the TC. the newer nikon TC's only work with af-s lens'.

btuner

Andrew,

Have a look at the Crumpler Industry Disgrace (http://www.crumpler.com.au/Lite/English/Products/Industry-Disgrace-ID02A.html). That's actually on my list to look at next time I'm in Hawthorn or the city where the Crumpler shops are. Brandon posted a photo of one a page or two back.

Nice HDR. At this size the misalignment is not that visible. You could try to allign the images with a panorama program that can export each image seperately, for instance PTGui. Programs like that can allign a lot better than Photomatix. Or better still, use a tripod ;)

Got lucky on my 2nd trip down to KSC, caught the shuttle Endeavor on Pad 39A, before it was moved to Pad 39B.

I waited until 2AM for the move from Pad39A to 39B to start, got eaten alive by bugs, got tired and eventually left. I found out later that the move started at 3:30AM, 3.5 hours later than planned.

At least I got some nice shots while being devoured...
