Ohhhh no, there goes a legendary chance to post 10kth post,

Well nice shot.

Can't believe the opportunity was sitting there for almost half an hour ;)

Awesome shots everybody... now that spring is finally here (actually we seem to have totally skipped spring this year: last week I was scraping ice off the car, the last three days the mercury has hit 30C, high 80s F!!!) I must get out and put my theory learned over the winter into to practice and get some shots worthy of this thread :)

ANP, awesome macro of the water droplets/splash shots. I oughta try it one of these days (even though I said that same exact statement since I got my D40 and lens about a year ago, and yet nothing LoL)

KJM, love the baby portraits.

Prospero, that hoverfly gave me goosebumps. Tack sharp!

My contribution for the day (but this was actually taken this past weekend)

Thanks for the compliments guys. The only real PP I did in those pics were Temperature, some minor lighting stuff, and soften skin. Rooz, hearing you say the PP was done well makes me feel like a bit more of a man ;) Seriously though, it means alot coming from someone with your talent. I'm practicing lol. These last few pages have been full of great shots guys.

NCF...Really nice setting and lighting there. The model imo looks slightly awkward due to her facial expression from the way i read it, self conscious might be a better way to word it.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone on the first photo in the post!

Sorry K1W1 but I reckon effort in PP not a lens.

Have you seen the halo's on the players against the sky? A white sky would have been better than pulling the curves that much. Or paste one over a different sky shot and erase with a feathered edge to sky.

Not bad for an absolute beginner. The first one looks WAY too overexposed. The second one isn't bad but you will quickly learn that cloudy days are your friend. As far as the rest a faster shutter speed would have done you well. Is it just me guys or does the baseball pic look like it has a bit of CA surrounding the uniforms?

To be honest, I would invest in a better lens. FWIW, I also shoot a D40x but I use the AF-s 50mm f/1.4 most of the time. Putting good glass in front of the camera made me WANT to shoot more. And we all know that practice does nothing but make you better!

Thank you. how much did you get your 50mm? is it Nikkor or a third party brand? what does CA mean? my understanding is 50mm is good for portraits. correct me if i'm wrong. another question. shutter speed is the f-stop right? not the number you can scroll all the way up to 4000?

sorry. read the manual but got me a little confused. HAH

Id suggest starting your own thread, you might get more help that way, this is mostly a picture sharing thread.

Shutter speed is not F stop, aperture is.

I second the suggestion of getting a better lens, the one you currently have just plain sucks, sorry if thats blunt, but its the truth.

I recently started as well. Of the many great pieces of advice I have gotten, one of the most immediately useful is to get yourself a good 50mm lens. The 1.8D is only about $100, the 1.4D is around $300, and the 1.4G around $500. Check Amazon.

The differences between them? The 1.8 is a little slower then the 1.4, but it is cheap and light. I used it for a couple months and absolutely loved it. If you arent price sensitive then get the 1.4G (I have that now), its faster and sharper, but the 1.8 is extremely good value for money.

Also while you are at Amazon, worth getting Bryan Petersons Understanding Exposure. Like $20. It can walk you through the different effects and uses of Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO.

Good luck.

Car seems very sharp but the background i wouldve preferred either sharp as well or had a longer shutter speed used to give the car a greater sense of motion, the slight blurring reminds me too much of camera shake (even though it's not). Maybe if you had captured it moments later then the car might've also filled the frame more too.

Its what I didn't have, and that would be a strobe. See, I was trying to brighten her face because the light was almost behind her and her face was dark, but in doing so I made the background become way too overexposed. If I had a flash with me, it would've been no problem! I tried the onboard flash, but with that lens it casts a really nasty shadow in the lower third of the image. So, I did the best that I know how. Her face could use a bit more light and the background could use a bit less, but oh well! :( Next time I'll be prepared!

Congrats Rooz! Great shot of it too. As is proof from various threads here ive been sold on Lumix range for quite some time. It's not that Panasonic don't release a whole lot of mediocre and uninspired models too, it's just about once per generation of cameras (ie about 1-2x a year) they release something of genuine quality for a P&S. Gotta admit, the LX3 in black does look pretty sexy for a P&S. Very Leica RangeFinder like in appearance.

I took my students (and my camera) to one of the few salt marshes left in Kanagawa last Saturday. This is a shot of a small mud crab locally referred to as 'chigo-gani' or 'child' crab because of it's behavioral display of quickly raising both claws repeatedly. Shooting these crabs is no mean feat, as they are only 1cm across and quite shy. I used my D90 with 18-105VR kit lens and got pretty good results, I think. I mostly used the 'action mode' on the camera, as I wasn't comfortable fiddling with manual settings in that environment. (Too much mud!) I adjusted/saved the NEF in NX2, exported to jpg and adjusted in LR.

Comments are welcome.

Built a parking garage across street for Ospey nest and sure enough, the birds returned this year. The roof parking is eye level and has some solid walls allowing a guarded approach, plus a steady ledge. Actually, two partial walls, one with the building in the background, the other the trees. While the trees are a nice backdrom, the building give a sense of the urban setting.

Nice car pics. I still have an autographed drift tire on my patio. Shot at a race museuem and soon after I was asked about shooting at a birthday party. Normally, I'm not into birthday parties but this party was special since it was for five tiger cubs who just turned one year old today. I've only processed two photos since I was out all day--one photo of Siegfried & Roy holding a birthday cake for the tigers and another photo of one of the cubs opening a birthday present...

Actually, his 70-300 is a 1:2 Macro, which is plenty for flowers. However, he lists it as HSM which is slightly innaccurate. He almost certainly has the version with the built in motor that works with his camera, but the motor is not the HSM motor that is in some of Sigma's lenses.

Guys the flower shoots are from the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro that I just bought, I forgot to update the sig. Damn I so wished my 70-300 could do it.

Btw the sigma 105mm does not auto focus on my D40, since its the older version without the built-in motor, but to my surprise manual focus is a blast, i have never had so much fun shooting a macro.
