I dont understand why people dont want to give constructive critisism. How is anyone suppose to improve or lean if all we do is kiss each others ass all the time?

Is it my eyes or does the bird and box look a bit like a Photoshop addition?
Maybe it's sharpened a bit too much?

Dread Pirate Roberts

To my eyes too. I've found I get the same effect sometimes even with minimal sharpening when the subject is back-lit like that as it naturally has a very high contrast level. I do like that super sharp screw, feels like I could tighten it from here. What's the new toy btw?

You guys only pay tax one day a year?

Everything "Balances out" on that one day of the year, of sorts. Some people owe MORE, others get some money back from the Government (essentially a interest free loan).

And over 40% of the country doesn't pay at all ;D

And of course this is not looking at state and local taxes, like sales taxes, of which we pay all year long.

Now... back on topic... photographs.

bturner, converging lines / WA distortion works well in the shot providing an interesting perspective, really makes it look quite striking a building
Scottman - Like this one more than the last, better foreground interest there too
AtilPikMan - Some kind of angle i feel would've made it a stronger photo, the front on seems to take away impact for me (ie take NCF's last shot here for an idea of what i mean..)

K1W1
04-23-2009, 03:52 AM
On the waterfront at Townsville in north Queensland (January 2007?). That's Magnetic Island in the background.
The Vinegar is to treat jelly fish bites, they are a real problem there at times during the year. In most places the only safe way to swim is with a full coverage "stinger" suit (a very thin wet suit basically) or in specially netted off areas on the beaches.

Info here. (http://www.accomportdouglas.com.au/faq_jellyfish.htm)

Cyberwlf
04-23-2009, 04:16 AM
Ahh FNQ. Well that makes sense then. Not too many beaches in the world probably have vinegar at peoples disposal like that though. I didn't see any at the beaches I went to around Cairns/Airlie Beach or places I went to in the Daintree though, but didn't get all the way to Townsville either. I didn't swim in the water up that way though (except at the GBR out in the reef), only opting for the public pools they have up there.

Thanks for the comments, Eddie and DPR. DPR, I really like your butterfly picture. I think butterflies are rather difficult to shoot. They scare very easily, and their size makes that you need quite a lot of DOF to get a nice picture. You did a very good job here.

Thanks Dennis, you have googled "Box Jellyfish" haven't you.

Here is just one search result. http://www.outback-australia-travel-secrets.com/box-jellyfish.html I've not vetted it for accuracy as I know nothing about it and have never seen one (the waters too cold further south where I live). In reality you'd have to be pretty safe though since the great barrier reef is such a famous spot for swimming.

Australians are famously proud of our dangerous wildlife. You'll have to judge for yourself whether people are being serious or trying to impress a tourist. However if locals say that water is full of crocodiles don't swim in it believe them. If they say the water is safe for swimming it probably is. If they say don't swim at a certain time of year don't, if they say it's probably alright this time of year it probably is. :)

Prospero
04-23-2009, 05:46 AM
Yes, I've googled just about every poisonous creature that lives in Australia by now :)

These box jellyfish are indeed very dangerous, and so are the Irukandji Jellyfish, which may be small enough to get into the netted areas on the beaches... Anyway, I will be careful where I'm going to swim.

Now that we are talking about dangerous creatures, here's a question I wanted to ask about bug photography in Australia. I know it's best not to try and shoot Redback, Whitetail and Funnelweb spiders, but are there any other creatures that I should better not try to get any pictures of?

Cyberwlf
04-23-2009, 05:55 AM
You can shoot those creatures, but at a distance. Australia's reputation for dangerous animals really is overstated for the average visitor, who spends most of their time in cities/towns, most of which the dangerous ones aren't really a part of every day life or chances are if you do encounter them they wont try to hurt you unless you do something to piss them off in the first place. Crocs though are carnivores and quite happy to eat meat ;)

But yeah, don't be like some of the stupider tourists and ignore Crocodile warning signs, they are there for everyones benefit (except the crocs). Do however try sampling the Croc, Kanga and Emu cuisine in North Queensland though, they are cheaper to eat than beef/chicken/pork and it's a good experience. IMO FNQ (Far North Queensland) is one of the most beautiful and most scenic locations in the world (and i've travelled a fair amount too).

Excuse the OT post :p

Dread Pirate Roberts

I'd photograph any spider except the funnelweb personally. Redbacks are slow and lazy.

Take the crocs and box jellyfish seriously, the rest are to scare the tourists.

Eat all the croc and Kangaroo you can they're great but I don't fancy the rest of the "for the tourist native food". Wild emu is just crazily oily, farmed emu is like tasteless chicken. Possum is just horrible.

Cyberwlf
04-23-2009, 08:11 AM
Croc tastes like salty chicken and Kangaroo tastes like gamey beef. But a good cut of either is quite tasty. But yeah wasn't crazy on Emu, but its worth trying such an ancient and extremely large flightless bird once at least. Possums are also annoying pests when they position themselves for being road kill ;)

But yeah in terms of swimming, if you take one of the organised GBR tours they take you to swimming areas which are safe in terms of jellyfish and crocs are not seen on the reefs last time i checked. They also happen to be ideal tours to take for photographic opportunities too.

We agree. I like to feel that the bridge goes somewhere. If anthing I'd try to crop it top and bottom to give it a more panorama look.

That's the joys of photography though. There is no right and wrong and for every opinion there is an equally valid contradicting opinion.

No I couldn't believe how close the darn thing focusses. It's about a 25% digital crop, but even so it fills the frame in the uncropped original.

Even more surprisingly I know the photo's soft but that was from my movement more than a lens problem.

Haven't posted in a while myself but here's mine. The San Diego Wild Animal Park has a butterfly encounter once a year. Sadly there were a lot of people with large cameras not being considerate of others, so I didn't have much opportunity to get quite the shot I was looking for. That said, this one came out ok.

That's an interesting shot. You will have to explain how you did it.

It was my first try with manual focus and drops, wasn't getting the timings right. I was either shooting a bit late or a bit early. Its taken in front of a window with ambient light coming in, flash synced to 1/500sec and a HUD lamp from my cell phone on the right. I used a spoon to drop in some water at about 12inch height, I triggered the shutter with a remote controller as soon as the drop leaves the spoon to get the perfect timing.

no i didnt blur that manually. that front bit of the slide also bugs me. strange light down there i think may have thrown the focal plane off cos it was dappled light. looks just kinda "wrong" in some places. maybe movement ? dunno.

I think you are right... the focal plane must be messed up a little (and out of the ordinary).

But I only thought that after analysing it closely...still think its a great shot. he is always looking at the camera :)

I could live with the "shortcomings" of slightly weird focus areas...!

I rather like it, personally. Since it is sharp but the rest of the grass is out of the DOF, it gives the shot a great sense of depth in my opinion. Plus when I look at your image, my eyes are automatically directed to the face, so the grass at the feet does not distract me at all. Just a thought, great shot regardless!
