I didn't have an opportunity to take many photos today, which is evidenced by my best shot being a random self portrait:

0.167 sec (1/6) (Held on a table, so easier than the other shot at 1/6)
f/5.6

ISO 200

Oh well. :P

I'm starting to figure out how to work this thing, though. :)

This photo is from a hike over the weekend. It was also then that I found out how much clouds can mess up a photo. It all came out over exposed. What's the proper technique to use in those kind of situations?

use a polariser
use grad filter
take multiple shots and merge to HDR in post processing.

This shot came out ok but I was hoping for something sharper at f22 but I think the wind was kinda shaking my camera even though it was on the tripod.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3455/3286663388_e191ae4c23_o.jpg

f22 is well past the diffraction limit for a 12 megapixel camera. That may explain some of your problem. Try f11. Of course, the wind may have been an issue. If your tripod has a hook, hang you camera bag from it (or something else even heavier. If not, now you know why it should.

Thanks. After I showed that photo to two other photographers, then they wanted to try and replicate it. Then I took a photo of them laying in the center of the road trying to shoot "Jack".

Below is another photo from the same park (Valley of Fire), I took the week before. They call this "Elephant Rock". From the other side, the elephant looks more like he is walking, but that is the typical road side photo.

Now it's time to get ready to go take some basketball photos since I played around at WPPI for most of the day.

Thanks. Basketball was also fun tonight. The funny thing is when I shoot a Nikon 50mm and the guy next to me is shooting something like a Canon 400mm. I simply don't shoot all the way across the court and I don't have to bother cropping as well. ;)

i also did an aged B&W conversion, (on flickr page), at kiwi's recommendation and i think i prefer it to the colour one.

T06, you should've waited for the clouds to move before shooting that IMO, the white crosses lose contrast (blend in in parts) to the background, but wouldve shown a much stronger contrast if it had been against the blue sky which is also there in the background. Also, just to nitpick, the image is not symmetrical/off centre too :p

Nice lighting on the tripod. It gives that 'main feature' effect. I've been looking for a nice, sturdier tripod that would support my D90 and Nikkor 105 micro (the heaviest camera and lens combo). I'm trying to find something around $100 but no luck yet.

While I posted others on the "perpetual bird thread", it is wierd seeing Great White Egrets in a tree. About 50 nests in a single tree. In about a month should gave a lot of hatchlings.

Cool stuff tizeye! Egrets are everywhere here in Louisiana but those are some elusive lil suckers!! I have yet to get close enough to get any good shots as they always see me coming. I think I need to buy some camo.. lol

Not near where the pics were taken, but I live across street from lake. They walk through my front yard and cross street over to neighbor quite regurally. It seems they like the lizards in the flower beds. Just began trying to take pics, but always have problem with background - cars, etc. Can't position myself for a pic would want to upload.

Hi All

this is my first picture on the forum. Although not fantastic I wanted to share this with you. We were at the beach yesterday (Wifes Birthday and she wanted a BBQ on the Beach !) when a helicopter piloted by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum came fast approaching I scrambled for my camera and took this picture. He politely dipped the nose of his helicopter waved and landed in his palace which is next to this public beach.

Wife was happy BBQ was scrummy.

PS not sure how to post pictures hope this works. All I can see is a blue ? in the bottom left corner where the pic should be.....

Unfortunately, this shot was taken right after my son came out of the bathtub so my wife was wearing a sweatshirt :( Hopefully sometime this week we will get a chance to take some more intimate shots of her and the baby. I actually want to darken it a bit, but here is the b+w. Oh, and Rooz- I made the softbox out of a pretty thick 9x6x6 box, lined with aluminum foil and a piece of white card stock paper from my wife's scrapbooking collection on the front. Looks pretty ghetto but works really well. This was lit with the 383 off the ceiling and the SB-25 softboxed camera left. I like the nice soft light that it throws. Thanks for the idea!

Here ya go. Unfortunately, this shot was taken right after my son came out of the bathtub so my wife was wearing a sweatshirt.

how bout this kj...

i used your color shot for the conversion so qual aint that good. for the conv i used the green chanel for mono to bring in a bit of midtone and shadow for more depth. add a red overlay for some warmth and a tiny bit of USM.

Mr post process - wow, things have changed.

I think you've made her look like a nurse not a mum though. I thinks it's the B&W plus the warmth and glasses. At least my idea of a nurse or glasses model.

Here is a shot from this past weekend that I think turned out well. As soon as we found this hit the three of us were all thinking the same thing and they were able to do it first try. They timed it perfectly. I had the easy part of pointing the camera.

Wow that is a cool shot! Always wondered how you make those pics where you freeze someone multiple times in the air, is it easy?. Nice work, not only behind the camera but on the bikes aswell :)

Thanks everyone for all the kind words regarding the bikes shot.

ESP, if I may ask, how did achieve this great photo? Did you use a tripod to get the background still on all the shots? I'm a newbie and just trying to learn. Thanks.

Polvadis, To answer your question it is a fairly easy process. The shots were taken at 7 fps and handheld. You don't necessarily need that many frames but that way I can pick and choose which shots I would use. I then open all of the shots in Photoshop and begin to combine them. All you need to do is pick one to use as the background and cut the others out and place them in the proper place on top of the original. I would generally drop the opacity of the shots I am adding on to ensure they are lined up perfectly and then cut them out once they are in place.

I was bored so I decided to take a shot of these peanuts using my DIY light box. I love the texture on the shell of these peanuts. Shooting it against a black background definitely helped it pop a bit more.

Strobist info:
• SB-600 triggered wirelessly using CLS at 1/64th power diffused left of camera, pointing upwards on white board
• A 25-watt, clip-on desk lamp pointed to the right of my diffused light box.
• On-board flash set to "--" to avoid overexposing.

At the very least cut the chin straps off. The helmet will be totally unsafe to use now and you need to completely remove the temptation. If you go back to biking you need a new lid.

P.S. The Yohsimura sticker brings back as many memories as the helmet. :)

On the tiger, the only light available was a pretty dim orange colored spotlight and I believe that was shot at 6400. The gymnasts were shot at 3200 and a shutter of 1/500 to have some chance of freezing the action. I started with 1/60 but it simply wasn't fast enough.

I've never kept a helmet in use more than 2 years I value my head too much.

Not to mention the effects of 6yrs of UV light exposure degrading the integrity of the poly-carbonate shell, that & the degraded shock-absorbing foam lining, are two pretty good reasons to buy a new helmet every couple of years.

nice. how dark was it out?

It was definitely pretty dark, but not pitch black (obviously if it was darker, there would be much more noise in the image). But what I wanted to show is that it was dark enough where an aperture of 1.4 and shutter speed of 1/40 or 1/50 (usually the slowest I go for handheld) wasn't enough to brighten the scene.
