Well, my boss pretty much knows that in this town he can either hire a responsible young guy who might take an occasional discrete photograph, or the other kind of young guy who might take other things.

Cleaning out my shed with my dad. This "little" fella was a little fiesty and almost got my dad. Same size and shape as a big redback but wrong colouration.

Not one of our dangerous 4 species but I wasn't game to get too close or set up all the gear so this was handheld MF with direct flash holding the camera upside down. Using the new Tammie. I've worked out how to get the Tammie autofocussing now so I'm happy.

Autofocus or manual is set by sliding the focus ring forwards or backwards. It's actually pretty good but caught me by surprise as I just didn't remember (and bought a cheapie with chinese documentation). I like manual for macro anyway so it wasn't a biggie but I was struggling to judge focus on the kiddies running around.

You won't regret buying the lens, it's very sharp and versatile. Here's a differnt shot with it. Blwoing the red channel is my fault not the lenses. My first reason to look at the histogram in three channels instead of combined.

If the petals were white, what happened? If it's an exposure problem, maybe shoot a bracket of 2 shots - -1 or -2 EV apart and combine them.

yepp, this is definately underexposed by i reckon 2 stops. i've shot these flowers alot and imo you need to make the white petals pop to ull it off. i often try and back off a step and let in some light towards the far corner to bring a bit more ambient onto the blue centre. if you spot meter off the petals it will turn out perfect SOOC.

remember that the orange bits will always stand out more than the centre blue cos its so dark so imo, the closest orange bits to the lens should be the focal points, to me it looks like you focussed a little too far back.

here's a quick rework.

Well, pet it, let it gnaw on your fingers (ouch! Sharp!), that sort of thing.

That little gal was only three weeks old, bigger than most housecats but still wobbly and unable to see much more than a foot in front of its face. Charming little thing though.

What you're seeing is a screen.

That's the 55mm Micro-Nikkor from my sig.

Wow either that pic is oversharpened or something else about it hurts to look at it...

Any sharpening applied there JTL? It looks like a good photo that was maybe a bit overcooked...Rooz is right. Got to watch the Active D in bright afternoon sun. Too much contrast as DPR noted as well. Also, there was a bit of grain in the sky, so I applied a a touch of NR, but did not change the default sharpening that the NX2 NR applies...which was obviously a mistake! I will attempt to undue the damage after I get two or three days sleep...:D

Update: O.K., in NX2 I pulled the sliders for shadow and highlight compensation down to zero, effectively eliminating the Active D-Lighting effect. Also, no sharpening at all was applied after the fact (but, I did not eliminate the effect of the in-camera sharpening setting). It is better...a subtle, yet profound difference. I forgot to straighten this one, though! Thanks everyone for the feedback...

No, in fact this was a quick and dirty edit in Picasa, I actually sharpened the photo overall (you can kinda see some grain in the bokeh). It's mostly just a matter of focusing on the nose or whiskers with a large aperture (f/3.2 here). If I'm lucky, the eyes are just out-of-focus enough to look soft and "dreamy".

GS,

You have pretty blue eyes, but other than that, I couldn't tell you much. Your portrait was WAY blown out.

Turo,

Gorgeous water! I'm wondering if it would have been more calendar worthy with less rock and more water? Or would that have been too blah?

To everyone else,

I just don't see what's so special abut Rooz' shots. I mean, they aren't bad n all, but I'm pretty sure my 11 year old can do the same with a point n shoot. :P

I've lately been dreaming up all these for photos in my head. I'm not pro, and don't have the gear to achieve high profile lit scenes, so i've been trying to work with what I have. Here's the fruits of my first real attempt to get an image in my head, out :

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3010/2883799410_6045597e17.jpg

Its somewhat... scandalous imagery, but looking beyond that I really wanted to test my composition, perspective, and use of blur to bring emphasis to sharper areas. Comments and critique please.

Cool lighting. It's pretty good, but you might want to get closer to the out of focus end of the rope, in my own humble opinion.

However - I am intrested to see / hear your findings re the new camera I spotted on your signature :) - please forgive if you have talked about it elswhere - but as I said - I am somewhat behind due to a temporary PC glitch that is now resolved (I toasted the graphics card !!!)

What do you want to know Geoff.

I haven't officially "talked" about it yet. I've mentioned that I may have acquired one, but really haven't been comfortable yet to say one way or the other if I'm going to keep it, if you should spend the money - etc. that sorta talk.

Geoff Chandler
09-26-2008, 05:00 PM
Well it was always on my mind that I should end up with a second camera at some stage - but that won't be for a year or so in reality - but I am keeping my ear to the ground as it were...
I already looked at the D300 and the D700 and they are a bit too big and heavy for my taste. I don't like the D60.
I DO like my D80 and suspect I would also like the D90 - so I was wondering what your impressions were if you have purchased one.
Is it similar in use to the D80 - (aside from getting lovely wide angle lenses stuck in it...!!!). Is it really a lot less noisy? Is that bigger screen really as nice as they say
you know - generally interested in how you find it as you must be one of the first here to get one...

aparmley
09-26-2008, 05:21 PM
Well, Geoff. I don't mean to sound so. . ."in the now", but if given the choice to shoot with the D80 or D90, I'd choose the D90. If I was asked, before my D80 broke, where I'd spend my money on a body upgrade - I'd say D700.

Now, I can appreciate your lack of enthusiasm for the larger, heavier bodies. But, if I was going to spend a year saving for a second camera, I'd make my D80 the back seater and get something fancy - Nikon has something in pipe for this spring and apparently its Big - I'd wait to see what that something is before I decided what to do with my money. I bought the D90 out of necessity, I may sell it along with the D80 when it gets back - I don't know yet. But, it certainly is a fun camera.

Do note that I think the update to the camera in your hand, is never enough to reason to upgrade. i.e. D80 > D90. I needed a camera and wanted the video. But, all else considered, and upgrade would be a D300-D700. Thats my .02 as of now.

Visual Reality
09-26-2008, 07:05 PM

A few months back (the week I bought the cam) he invaded the house and I had screaming kids, wife etc. What's a brave fella to do but chemical warfare. I couldn't think how to get him out of the house alive.:(

So I took shots the next day and posted them on POTD with the 18-200 and crummy tripod. I then left him in a yoghurt container. When I got the new lens last week I remembered him and took some shots with a proper setup. Much more satisfying.

Still I'd rather do it live, in which case get them mating or just drying their wings from hatching.

I couldn't justify, or afford a D700 - nice as it is. I could do a D300 which on paper is my ideal camera - not so bothered about Video - or even live view - I have a reasonable P&S that does that for me.

Geoff, will you be putting the P&S on the tripod instead of your DSLR? That's what Live View is for - so you don't have to contort your body to see the viewfinder when on a tripod. Personally I think it's great and I will never own another one without it.

CJ, I have received a couple of PM's regarding some of my shots, so rather than start a pointless argument over it I just edited my posts. I will be posting a lot less, since I am shooting mostly glamour now. It has never been my intent to offend.

I know a few guys who shoot with that 90mm, and it is SHARP! If I was a prime lens kind of guy I would definitely get it. I'm still swallowing the idea of spending $1700 to buy a 24-70mm f2.8 Nikkor lens... It's not going down well, I'll tell you that much, especially when Tamron's equivalent is 1/3rd of the price of the Nikkor.

Fiasco,

You're right! I haven't used the 50mm in a while, and the dust on the UV filter shows the obvious evidence :o
I actually haven't used it since I got the 10-20mm and recently, the 105mm. I'm on the "new lens testing" phase hehehe.

I stopped using the 50mm about a 2 weeks after I bought it. I prefer to use my 70-300mm wide open to get some nice silky bokeh. I'm more of a zoom lens shooter anyway. At the time it seemed like a no brainer purchase to get the 50mm. I know people who only shoot with a 50mm permanently on their cameras. Guess it's not for everyone.

Geoff, will you be putting the P&S on the tripod instead of your DSLR? That's what Live View is for - so you don't have to contort your body to see the viewfinder when on a tripod. Personally I think it's great and I will never own another one without it.

My P&S is sort of permanent Live View ~ it is one of those also with an EVF
(Electronic View Finder), so it's like live view through the view finder - or screen through the viewfinder.
Not sure quite what you meant - but yes I do use my crumby Tripod with it at times - but the P&S is one of those with a flip out screen so it's fairly flexable.
Got to admit however - I don't use the screen to take photos very much.
Lot's of P&S only have a screen - which I find inconvenient - but you have to adapt when work hands you one and asks you to take some photos of stuf with it.
(Lookong forward to the return of my D80 so I can get snapping properly again!!!)

The kookaburra is part of the Kingfisher family of birds so that is what I am assuming it actually is - some sort of kingfisher.
There are a lot of similarities.

I may have to try IR myself. Starting to dig those photos. Also read that IR is good for portrait photography since it covers up skin flaws.

I took the camera out for a spin yesterday. I also wanted to take the jet in the background out for a spin but I figured with armed Security Forces being only a few yards with authorization to use deadly force, it might not be a good idea. A few close ups of the cars, jets, sign, etc. are on my Flickr account.

Can't seem to get the sharpness I want out of it and moving objects always seem to blur .But when I had the D50 the same shots were always clear and well defined.

Geoff Chandler
09-29-2008, 09:18 AM
herc182 - OK now - I went back later and he link was flying!!

Calico - that sounds a bit odd?!
I know I had similar problems intitially - but I was coming from a lighter P&S with Anti Shake.
I bumped the in camera sharpness up on mine - it's default is quite soft.
Also you might play with the contrast and or saturation settings - they
should be OK at normal - but have a play and see what you find - I sometimes put one or the other
on Auto if I am not sure...
Obvious one here - I now hold the end of the lens - wasn't neccesary with the KM A-200 - but when
I push the shutter release there is a small amount of camera dip - which magnifies up to quite a lot
of movement at the end of the lens - now I know this shouldn't be different compared to the D50.
Try also keeping your shutter speeds up a bit faster until you nail the problem..
Let us know how you get along.

Tori, this is a great shot. Curves always add to a photo. I think the contrast is a little heavy and this could be why Herc182 is seeing a little over saturation. I would love to see your shot at sunrise or sunset. I am heading out to Cedar Breaks this weekend for the fall colors. I can't wait!

One of the camera salesman gave me a black Nikon hat with the yellow logo. Many times I wear it at the local camera club meetings to help sport the dark side and because of the flack I caught by the Canon owners when I first joined the club. :p

At times, I tell myself it would sure be nice to have one of those long lenses. Other times, I think about how heavy the lenses would be to carry around, especially when I see someone else who is also hauling around a tripod and some heavy head.

Taken yesterday at my usual breakfast place. Would've liked to get closer, but I was concerned about focus and the shadow from the lens. :)

I did not take this picture, my girlfriend did. I'm teaching her the little bit I know about photography. I thought this one came out rather well considering she has been at this for only a few days! The squirrel came out just a tad blown out, but I think it still looks great!

Not bad Turo. Be careful or she'll start stealing your camera.

I liked this composition, shame I used consumer glass, handheld on a moving rocking ferry at night. It looked ok on the camera screen:(

Sydney harbour Saturday night.
