Budget

$1,000 retail price.

Size

very compact.

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you? 6 MP would be fine.

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify)

highest possible

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)

Do you care for manual controls?

no, prefer to have automatic.

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?

Taking up close family photos and pictures of scenery and attractions at Disney World. I will be taking pictures up close with people and may want to frame them in a 8x10 or so frame, so I want reasonably good quality for indoor up close photos on that size print.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?

medium prints.

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?

Indoor photos of people yes, but there should be reasonable lighting.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?

Not on this one.

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?

Sony because of the shutter lag, anything with a really fast shutter will be fine.

Are there particular models you already have in mind?

no

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)

wide angle and image stabilization would be nice.

Small compacts only cost $300-$500 so you can spend much less than $1,000. Canon SD800 has IS and wide angle. I also like the Fuji F30 and Casio Z850.
