I am currently using a Canon Digital Ixus i (5.0 megapixels) but I find I have difficulties capturing my young children with it. Many a times, I end up with pictures of closed eyes, turned heads, etc despite snapping at my presumed "right moment". I am not able to snap continuously too.
I know SLRs are great at continuously snapping to capture kid's expressions but I find them too bulky especially when I need to carry my kids. What is a good compact size digital camera that I should get? My requirements are as follows. Thanks in advance.

Budget: S$700

Size: Compact

Features:
How many megapixels will suffice for you? : 6 megapixels & above

* What optical zoom will you need? : above 4x

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10): 8

Do you care for manual controls? : no preference

General Usage

To capture young kids (who cannot sit still for long and also their fast changing expressions)

lots of indoor and outdoor shots and night shots too.

I use the video feature quite often too.

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate? - no particular dislike. but quite comfortable with canon, olympus, nikon.

What Ixus model are you using? How old? Canon A700/A710 are newer models with 6x zoom that should have less shutter lag. Canon S3 and Sony H2 have 12x zoom and good video but are bigger.
