I've been puzzling over this for a while and can't come up with the information. I'm thinking of retiring my Sony F707 for a new Canon S3. One of the things I want to be able to do is to set the camera on a tripod and take pictures of birds by remote shutter release.

So what I need is image stabilization, a long lens, and remote shutter release.
But I can't find out if it's even available for the S3. Also, If I should be looking at a different camera to accomplish these goals, please let me know.

Aside from the wildlife pictures, I will be using the camera for all of the general pictures taking and automatic will be useful. Thanks!

someone is thankfully going to correct me if Im wrong but
i think canon recommend you turn IS off when on a tripod
it isnt going to be any use to you there anyway

I don't know why you'd need image stabilization for use with a tripod, just as Riley says. In fact, it's usually recommended that you shut IS off when mounting the camera on a tripod anyway.

I have a Panasonic FZ30, which has a remote cable release jack, though I haven't used it. However, it doesn't do such a bad job at shooting birds, may I say? Here's one I took yesterday at full zoom in its 5MP EZ mode, with a Nikon TC-E17ED 1.7X adapter affixed, of a Sparrow, at 1/200 of a second, handheld:

Not bad for handholding 909mm of lens? Here's another one of a Mallard I like also, same lens setup, though different shutterspeed (1/400):
