Greetings,

In a previous thread, someone posted some really great macro photos. The photographer used a Macro Extension Tube from Raynox, something like: Raynox DCr-250 Super Macro Scan Conversion Lens (http://raynox.co.jp/english/dcr/dcr250/indexdcr250eg.htm)

In this thread ( This thread (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25667) ), were a few amazing macro shots of insects.

Im wondering if there are any good Macro Extension Tubes I could use with my Canon Rebel XTi 400D, 18-55mm kit lens to achieve similar shots to those posted in the thread mentioned above.

Brands / price / links / examples appreciated.

Krz

The newer Canon 12 mm extension tube works with the EF-s lens, but, very expensive. There is also a brand from the UK that works with EF-s lens. I'm not sure of the brand , maybe it was Jessops Auto Extension Tubes .

I personally use Kenko brand. They only fit on EF.

How much are the Kenko ones? Will they help achieve the same quality as the photos posted on the forum (mentioned above) ?

Hoping to hear your feedback

Here is a 100% crop of a similar shot I just took. All I have done is resized for the web.

Canon Rebel XT, 50 F1.4 set at F8, 56 mm of Kenko tubes (stacked two tubes). I used the onboard flash, ISO 100.

....Oh...forgot....The Kenko tubes come in a set of 3. Bought in Canada for $170 plus taxes (CDN $)

BTW, the Kenko tubes do not work with the EF-S lens. I believe the Canon one works, but, cost a lot of money just for a single 12 mm tube. In the UK, the tubes branded Jessops are suppose to accept EF-S also.

You could probably pick up a set of Kenko and a EF 50 F1.8 for the same money as a single Canon tube.

the kenko tubes were listed in my sig for a very long time.

i used to say that too many tubes took a big cut out of my contrast/color but that was largely because i was pushing it too far by using a 1.4x TC with 68mm of tubes. i stopped using a TC with the tubes and everything looks fine now (much improved lighting technique didn't hurt either ;) )

but a 50 f1.8 + kenko tubes comes awfully close to the price of a sigma 50mm macro lens, so if one doesn't need the f1.8 aperture then getting a true macro lens makes more sense.

You think the Sigma 50mm macro lenses are good? Just wondering ..

most well known macro lenses are supposed to be very good optically, the sig 50 included. i always shoot macro in MF so any AF short comings of the sigma wouldn't really matter to me
