View Full Version : Smaller upgrade from Powershot s50

I've had a Canon Powershot s50 5 megapixel for a couple of years now and have been reasonably pleased with it apart from it being bit bulky. I am now after an upgrade, but I would like the new one to be much more compact and pocket size (obviously as well as better pictures!).

I like the look of the Sony models such as the W100 and N2 (love the idea of touch screen controls on this one - does it work well?), but there are also the Canon Digital ixus type models which look promising. (Although not had an ixus since the old APS models) Must admit that i tend to go to the bigger brands like sony or canon, but am i missing out on any other potential gems? There is so much choice and so many reviews out there i would appreciate a few opinions please.

Requirements

Small and pocketsize
At least 3-4x optical zoom
easy to use but also flexibility for manual shots, etc
At least 7-8 MPixels
good performance on variety of shots such as night/indoors/outdoors.
well built (my s50 lost the 'paint' n its control knob making it very hard to select the right modes)

Why do you need at least 7-8 MPixels? What is your price range?

Yes Canon SD's, Sony W100 and N2 are good small ones. Also, Casio Z850 and Fuji F30 are "other potential gems". They have more manual controls than the Canon's and Sony's. I don't like touch screens, makes the screen dirty.
