I want to be able to take pictures of my son close up. What is the most important feature I need to get the best pictures? If you're talking about "head shots" of your son, nearly any digital camera sold today has the "range" for that type of shot. If you're talking about a full-frame of his nostril, then macro capability would be important. But assuming the former, and assuming you're wanting to take the shots indoors, without flash, probably the Fuji F30 would suit your needs.

I definately don't want a close up of his nostril! haha I was just thinking head shots and I want to be able to blow them up...atleast to an 8x10 Those are the primary type pics I would take...other than just family/portrait type pics. I want to learn more about photography...but want to stay under 300.00 so I am trying to make sure I get a cam. with those features!

Any camera 4MP and over can print 8x10". But if you want a learning camera I recommend one of the Canon A. They have all the manual controls one can wish for. And all have optional accessories such as flash and zoom lens, should you want to extend the reach.
A710 is. Not sure if it's within your budget.
6x optical zoom, Image Stabiliser (IS), 7MP.
A630.
4x optical zoom, swing and swivel LCD, 8 MP. No IS.
