Okay, hitting the Grand Canyon and Petrified forest end of Dec. Any suggestions for a good lens for this? keeping in mind what I have in the profile. Also there are no thousand dollar lenses in my future.

I have been to the Grand Canyon a few years back, I would suggest a wide angle lens like the Tokina 12-24 f/4.

I just started shooting with my Canon 10-22 today- wide is wonderful.

I thing Jason recommended an excellent lens for a Nikon body that is also reasonably priced. While I think you will enjoy and want to own this lens for indoor use as well as landscapes, you could always rent it for a week or two rather than purchasing it if you don't feel you will use it regularly.

* This is also a great portrait lens when you want to give a humorous look to your subject. I took a great headshot of my black lab/great dane mix today with the wide lens.

Wide angle lens
Decent Tripod
Extra SD cards
Lens Hood for the 18-55 (I assume that the 70-300 has one)
CP filter

CP filter
Ahhh, now we are talking, that crossed my mind too, because filters is one area where I really don't know what I need. Other than UV, CP, what else would be good for shots like that, and shots lets say at the beach, where your sky might REALLY be blown out if you expose for kids/family shots? Maybe a gradient? What is most important, and which brands... Oops, guess I need to start a new thread... Sorry.

Here is my new thread... http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25429

Any other suggestions for a wide angle lens?
Yes, the 70 has a hood, the 18 does not.

And what is a cp filter?

Thanks

As far as I know the two value competitors are the Tokina already mentioned and the Sigma 10-20. I do not have experience with either but it seems that both lenses have fairly loyal followings.
If you are thinking of any particular lens jump on to Flickr, there is bound to be a forum specifically for that model with pleanty of example photos.
If I was going to those places and taking photos was my primary intention I think I would invest in a decent tripod above anything else. It's amazing how much better the photos are with a tripod although they are not things that go well with your average "are we there yet" family holiday.
