View Full Version : Update to Pentax K100D sucks

A little while ago I wrote in saying the Pentax K100D is an overpriced paperweight. This is an update for that forum.

Pentax still has no idea why I can't upload from the camera to my pc at USB2 speeds. They are stumped.

I returned the camera to the store I bought it from because I could never get a clear sharp image. Even with the camera set on maximum (2+) sharpness. The shop assistant took a look at the pics and said the same as me, ie the pics aren't very sharp or clear. He then proceeded to take a number of pics with my camera and their demonstration model. He tried different lenses and took the same shots on both cameras before comparing them side by side.

It turns out that my camera actually has better colour in its pics compared to theirs. However, their camera takes fractionally sharper pics than mine.

Anyway the guys at the store said the images being produced by both the cameras were quite poor and not what they would have expected. They said if the object was in focus when you took the picture, then it should be in focus after you take it and when you print it out. As it is, both of the Pentax K100Ds they tested gave really poor results.

It appears that the Pentax K100D is just not a good camera when it comes to being able to focus on anything more than a couple of feet away. The further the object is from the camera, the worse the picture becomes, (more blurry and out of focus). This is not very good considering the $1000AU price tag you pay for this digital SLR. And if you add another $1000AU for a genuine Pentax lens, you have an extremely overpriced paperweight that can take pictures about as well as a $100 point and shoot happy snap camera.

If anybody is looking for a digital SLR I would suggest going for a different model than the Pentax K100D. It is a complete let down.

What kind of lens were you using out of curiosity? Sorry to hear of the problems, seems there's been a few people unhappy with the K100D.

I tried the Pentax DL and found that couldn't focus on the open doorway of the camera shop some 20 feet away. It couldn't even focus on the counter some 8 feet away either. The Nikon D50 I tried locked on instantly. The XT locked on more slowly but it locked on. Perhaps Pentax has a focussing issue with some of its cameras?

Yea I have the GX-1L and I rarely if ever use autofocus because it always hunts or just doesn't seem to get it right. I just use manual and just squint at the viewfinder.lol.

That is really odd. I just got my K110D last week and have been quite impressed with it. Perhaps Pentax is having problems with manfacturing consistency? From my experience so far I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. I've been having very good luck with the autofocusing.

My K100d focuses fine... these samples are at all different distances, most well more than a couple of feet away and tack sharp (to my eye) using auto focus...

And these aren't the odd ones of the bunch, most are like this, any errors are usually my fault not the cameras...

Maybe it was poor lenses.... BTW were these Sigma (non-EX) lenses??? I refuse to use them these days as the AF performance is TERRIBLE they ALWAYS backfocus, but as my Tamron and Pentax lenses have no such issue, I blame Sigma not Pentax (esp as I know Canon users with similar issues with Sigma NON-EX lenses)....

K100d low light AF is FAR better than the DS or DL in my experience.. They were pretty slow and hesitant, I won't deny that..

The lenses I have used include genuine Pentax, Sigma and another brand which the camera store tried.

We (the guys at the camera shop and myself) tried the cameras on auto focus as well as manual focus and it didn't make any difference to the sharpness of the image. We also tried out the 3 different types of lens, theirs not mine, and the same problem occured with all the lenses. The further the image got from the camera, the blurrier the picture turned out.

Hi Jeisner, those pics are beautiful and sharp, even my macro work is nowhere near as sharp as them. And the further from the camera the object is, the crappier the pic becomes.

Sounds to me like a lens mount problem. If the lens is a shade too far away from the film plane then ininity will never be obtained. Macro will be sharp and nothing else will.
