With Nikon's new 3x rebate program in effect I wanted to check prices of the 30D, D80, and D200 with the equivalent lenses from both companies using the exact lens configuration that I purchased. 10-22, 17-55, 85 f/1.8, 70-200 IS, 580EX flash. All prices shown are B&H.

Summary:
The two packages are equivalent in terms of glass range and quality with the only difference being that the Canon 17-55 includes Image Stabilization.

D80 w/above $4934 (Total rebates included- $510)
30D w/above $5403 (Total rebates included- $430)
D200 w/above $5634 (Total rebates included- $510)
5D $6649 (17-40L & 24-70L instead of 10-22/17-55)

Conclusion- For people purchasing a 30D, there is negligible difference between the Canon 2x rebates and the Nikon 3x rebates because Nikon doesn't give rebates on the body.

* I also compared the prices of the big lenses since Nikon has $300 rebates on their 300 and 400 f/2.8

Nikon 300 f/2.8 VR $4499-$300 rebate = $4199
Canon 300 f/2.8 IS $3899 no rebate = $3899

Nikon 400 f/2.8 $7499- $300 rebate = $7199 Nikon has no VR
Canon 400 f/2.8 IS $6599 no rebate = $6599

So, the D80 is about $500 cheaper and the D200 is about $200 more.

Well...in any case either company is going to be lucky to find someone willing to fork over that much at once!

I know. That's why I spread my purchase out over two weeks.;)

I'm not lucky enough to have a good job and be able to buy these products that have rebates. I just bought a new lens, and thats gonna be it for me for a while until I get a hotshoe flash. which might be the sb800 because it is included in the rebate with a 3x of 30$.

I am actually confused on what the double rebate and triple rebate means? Could anyone inform me?

You buy one item from the rebate list, you get that items "single rebate", rebate.

If you buy two items from the rebate list, you get each of those items "double rebate", rebates.

If you buy three items from the rebate list, you get each of those items "triple rebate", rebates.

But, like you, I'm sure most people are stretching to buy even two items, let alone three! And the unfortunate part is that the rebates only count for the items listed...

yeah, 3 more lenses w ould be amazing for me, cuz it would cost soo much. What I was looking at was may be the prime lenses and an sb800 but I am just dreaming because I ahve no money that I can spend.:(
